I am looking for one of these because my speakers only support this. I'm needing to just hook up 6 RCA plugs from DVD player straight to speakers for DD 5.1.
The problem is that these players are hard to find. I've done searching and got some models, but they are impossible to find an online store that has them.
Pioneer DV-585A
Sony DVPNS52P
Yamada DVX6700
Just 3 of the very many many DVD players with built in decoders, but then again I can't find them anywhere to purchase. I'm particularly interested in the Pioneer one, but anything I can get my hands on is fine. This is just a garage setup, I don't need anything fancy, just something to get the job done. But if there was a mid-high range performance player, I wouldn't mind either.

most of the sony players have built in decoders.I have a 5 year old sony player that has built in decoder. There must be tons of players from other manufacturers that have built in decoders too.You just have to search.

I believe those dvd players have built in DD5.1 (and/or DTS) that are meant to go into a receiver's 5.1 input so it can be amplified to speakers. You're probably going to get a very weak audio signal out of the dvd players as those players do not have any amplification.
The pioneer 585 should be similar to the more recent Pioneer 588. DVD-Audio/SACD capable players have built in decoders.

If he can plug the RCAs into the speakers, it's likely that they are self-powered speakers. One can only hope that they have volume controls...........................

Pretty much every universal player has built in decoders and the requisite 5.1 outputs. There several universal players in the $100 or under range....
I just purchased the Pioneer DV-585A. I also bought a pair of Bose 201 front speakers. I should avoid connecting these through the DVD player correct? Does it have ANY amplification at all? My tv has 13 watt/channel capability. I guess I could check my manual but isn't it very common for all or most dvd players to not have any amplification at all?
Just trying to figure out best power source withought a reciever  which I can't afford right now because I blew all the money on the plasma

Yikes!
Stand alone DVD players (not combo AVR's that have a drive slot) do not have any amplification. And they usually lack any sort of level control, such that you really can not run these straight into an amp.
Sorry that you blew your wad on the plasma :) , but you really are going to need a receiver, or live for a while with the speakers that your plasma has.

Receiver will come in time, for now I need to find speakers. The tv didn't come with any. Looks like I'll have to run them into the tv for now until that receiver gets bought, correct?

Get some rca adapters and pc speakers for a quick solution.

Yes, assuming it in fact can drive external speakers. You may want to peruse the owners manual for the plasma, just to make sure.
13w should be fine for casual listening via your 201's.

I would rather invest the $$ into something I will later use in my full surround sound.

Thanks very much.
TV didn't come with speakers. They were an options for more $$$(detachable) So Im guessing the tv MUST have a connection otherwise the detachable speakers wouldnt be an option.

There is no DVD player that I am aware of that can drive speakers directly. You have to amplify the audio outputs of the DVD player through an amplifier or Receiver. You also need this to control volume, balance and tone of the sound.
Some large screen TV's have built-in speakers, and audio inputs, and with this you can connect the audio outputs of the DVD player, along with the video outputs and have the TV provide both the sound and picture from the DVD. This is not as good as having a separate home theatre amplifier and separate speakers for each channel of information on the soundtrack.
Your DVD player with "built-in" decoder for Dolby 5.1 sound, just means that the player takes the encoded digital sound bitstream and decodes it to the separate channels needed to feed an external amplifier to reproduce Dolby 5.1 sound. It does not take the place of an external amplifier.
