View Full Version : reboot when accessing remote replay guide?

I can't seem to find answer to my issue anywhere.

I recently upgraded a new 5504 with a Seagate 200GB 7200 8MB cache drive. After the upgrade everything was working fine. A week after the upgrade I tried accessing the Replay Guide on a remote 5040 (200GB Maxtor) in my living room. As I started to scroll down the recorded the shows, the local replay reboots. This happens every time I try accessing shows from the remote replay. Before the upgrade I never had an issue. You would think a faster drive and more buffer space wouldn't have an issue with this.

I'm completely lost as to why this is happening. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,
Bryan

Do you record on 'standard' quality' thus have 100s of shows?

There are known problems getting remote listings after big upgrades.

If you have several replaytvs consider keeping the 40 gig drives in them (maybe 80 or 120, not bigger) and building a DVA server, put big drives in that.

big arse HDs are great if you have 1 replay, or maybe(I have not tested this one out) if you intend to always record on high quality (less listings).

Yeah, I already have a DVA server with 4 160+ drives in it, but they are filled. :)

I need to burn more shows to DVD but time just doesn't permit it all that often.

The remote replay currently only has about 25 shows on it at this time. The local replay has only 5 shows on it.

The reboot happens when I'm going down the left side of the guide (main categories), as I'm scrolling through the shows the system reboots.

If I get time this weekend I'll try an older 120GB 2MB cache drive and see if I get the same results. It's ashame I've got 120 and 160 gig drives just laying around because I have no where to put them. I guess that's a good problem?

How are they networked? Wirelessly? If you attempt to stream and/or guide refresh on a pair with network issues, you can get reboot.

They are connected back to the same switch via Cat5e cable.

Double check all of your CAT-5 cable, especially the connectors. Try swapping out the cables in different ports on the switch too. Chances are it's a glitch somewhere in your network.

An Issue with the network, even though it worked just fine with the original 40GB drive?

I'll give it a try, I'll have to snatch a few cables from the office. I'll even take the Fluke Cat5-7 tester home. :)

I also think it's some anomaly in your network. I'd consider replacing your data switch. Try an inexpensive giga-bit rated switch. I have found that ReplayTV units are very sensitive to network conditions that any PC would take in stride. I once had similar instability and replacing the data switch fixed it right up. And when I changed my entire network to Buffalo wireless routers with built-in switches, it got even better. Our five ReplayTV units act like they are hard wired together.

Bye.

To see if the problem is because of a large guide (too many shows recorded), move the cursor over to one of the categories and scroll down. If it doesn't reboot just browse your shows by category in the future.

Those old 120gb and 160gb drives make great places to archive shows that you don't want cluttering up your dva server. I bought a removable hard drive mount at Fry's for about $20 (?) and buy a spare tray for $10 (?) every time I end up with an extra drive of any size, I even use the 40gbs. I then move the shows that I have seen already offline, kind of like a big dvd. Make sure you move all the associated files for each show as well as the MPG. (.evt, .ndx, .xml and .bak)

Hope that helps.
