View Full Version : Replaytv directly to DVD?

I have 2 replaytvs and always record a ton of stuff. I know how to transfer shows to my computer, and then burn the shows to DVD. However, what I'd really like to do would be to burn the shows directly to DVD without using the PC at all, by playing the show with "skip comercial" on" and have that feed transfer to DVD so I don't have to use an editing program to take all the comercials out for each show when I burn it to DVD. Is there a particular type of DVD recorder that could be used for this?

Any DVD recorder capable of recording external video/audio would do. However, the results will be sub-optimal as:

1. CA is not always 100% accurate, and sometimes unwittingly cuts program material; if you watch any of the Law & Orders you know what I'm talking about
2. you'll get brief snippets of non-program material included
3. you'll get the annoying (to me at least) CA icon at every skip
4. and there will be some picture degradation from the additional decoding/encoding step.

By using DVArchive and VideoReDo, I get perfect and clean transitions between segments and the best preservation of picture quality. To me it's worth the extra effort.

Get a hdd/DVD recorder with editing capabilities, like the Panasonic DMR-E100H, dub the entire program as-is to the hdd, then edit out the commercails on the Panny unit after that. Then you can do a dub to DVD within the unit itself, wither high-speed or straight up real-time.

Thank you both for your posts. I didn't think about the fact that the CA animation would appear on the DVD. I searched for the Panasonic DMR-E100H and it went for anywhere between $600 and $1,000, which is considerably more than I wanted to spend. I found a lot of other ones for $300 or less, and all of them had a hard drive. I would only need to store a few shows at a time, the most important thing would be the editing capabilities. What exactly is the difference between differently priced DVD recorders besides HD space?

You don't have to worry about any icons appearing in the picture (CA animation) if you use the option to Save To VCR instead of using Play or Play From Beginning.

Of course, it's been so long since I've saved anything to VCR (thanks to DVA and recordable DVDs) that I totally blanked out the advantages of it.

And, of course, "Save to VCR" is not an available option if you're streaming from a remote unit. In my case, that would be 80% of the time.
