View Full Version : Clayface & plasmas question
I see a variety of plasma displays at work, from Pioneer to Phillips, & I always notice the clayface problem.. Even when feed a HD feed? Is that due to poor calibration, or is just a flaw in the technology.. I still think plasma is the best way to engulf the viewer when watching a movie, & I like the fact that Plasmas have dark levels similar to CRTS as well as rich colors.. Been eyeing the Panasonic 37inch..
The clay face effect is actually due to over processing and enhancement of the source signal. Some plasma’s compensates this way to eliminate noise and artifacts. Top tier plasma manufacturers have eliminated the clay face effect with better factory calibration and more sophisticated processing algorithms. So if you buy lower end, non name brand plasma you will have to tweak it more to get a desirable picture and some you won't be able to eliminate the problem completely.
If you are thinking of buying a Panasonic, you won't have any problem with clay faces or poor quality picture. All it takes is a few setting changes and it will look great.

Clay face ( false contouring) can also be caused by a poor quality feed.

Just want I needed.. TY..
I've had the Panny TH-50PHD8UK for about 3 weeks now and I have yet to see clayface with ANY programming (OTA HD, OTA SD, or DVDs).
I can say pretty confidently that clayface is not an issue with my display.

I saw this on the 50PX50U Panasonic plasma at three local B&M's. They looked good from a distance but from about 6' - 8' some faces would definitely show the 'clay face' effect. This would be a problem for me since seating in my room is anywhere from 6' to 12' from the screen. Still, no one on this forum seemed to be complaining about it (on these sets) so I assumed it could be dialed out. Then I got to play with the settings at CC where I found the TV was set to Vivid and the sharpness was all the way up! Setting the sharpness to 0 seemed to eliminate the effect and made the picture much more natural. At that point I was sure all would be fine.
Well I'm now the proud owner of a HP 5000N (which is a rebranded Panasonic 50PX500U) and I was right. Calibrating the set showed that the sharpness should actually be set to -10 when using the Vivid mode (+5 for Standard and +10 for Cinema).
Get hold of a remote in a local store and try this yourself. I think that will cure your problem.

Ive had my Philips 9630a since August and have seen no signs of clayface or false contouring. :)
