MODEL IN QUESTION: CT-30WX15

Its funny I am asking this, being that I am a marketing rep for Panasonic and I cant answer my own question. Truthfully though they only train us on the plasmas, LCD, and rear projection. But as you know Panasonic is the best with plasma now, that is 90% of our focus.

So here is my dilema. I want to get my mother a new tv for her bedroom, her 15 year old toshiba finally kicked. and she has a shite zenith vcr combo, circa 2002, and its MONO!

anyways by the grace of god the panasonic 30" fits in there with an inch to spare horizonaly and verticaly. Unfortunatly it is 3 inches over in depth but I have a solution.

So here is the crazy issue:
WHY DOES PANASONIC STATE THAT IT ONLY DOES 480P AND 1080I.
:( :(

I finally have come to the realization that maybe it means that it can do 480P natively and can show upto 1080i, to me that seems like the most sensuble, yet sad conclusion.

But then another side of me says, this is typical of Panasonic. They are always weird with claims. look inside the manual for a dvd player. I got my parents a DVD/VCR combo and the manual said it only played -r and certain brands. I had to burn +R infront of my dad to prove him wrong. It always seems Panasonic stays within the rules.

Maybe they think that 480 and 1080 are the only standards. Maybe they think that DVD is only 480 which is true, and HDTV only comes in 1080i.

I gave google my best shot, and could not anything on this issue. And I am pretty damn sure what kind of nonsense they will feed me at their call center.

Now from reading some threads on here I know alot of you are sony fans. Thats cool but understand this. I found this panasonic at Sams Club for just 670$ it is 899$ retail, at circuit city.
Whats also awesome about sams is their extended warranties. They have flat rates. Its 75$ upto 1000$ and its 200$ upto 4000$

Now value city had a well living Sanyo 30" Remanufactured, had HDMI and tuner. for a measley 300$ !!!

So if YOU have the answer or an opinion, I would be honored to hear it!

If you want to hear insider informaiton about Panasonic dont hesitate to ask!

And if you know of any refurb deals from Sony, Panasonic, Phillips, or Sanyo please let me know?

Also have you heard of any other companies doing this, specing the TV to do 480P and 1080i ?

Far as I know, there aren't any tube HDTVs within Earthly budget that output 720p, if that is in fact what you're worried about missing.

They upconvert 720p to 1080i.

This is a good thing. It also upconverts/line-doubles SD/480i broadcasts to 480p which really smooths out the picture nicely. Pannys won't input or upconvert 720p however, but all HD Set Top Boxes are capable of being set to output the 720p sources to 1080i then on to the TV so there's no real need for Panasonic to include 720p support for watching HD TV.

thanks guys for the info, I have been looking hard for the answer to this.

but I am confused now.

Randy I will go with your answer as God's, although it is the more dismal. For the near future we will be watching HD on this TV in two formats:

1st- Comcast digital cable HDTV. We wont be using broadcast tuner, the Simpsons is all we watch on aentenna TV. Do you think we will have that issue? There is no switch on the back, and barely any settings to configure.

2nd- Samsung Upconverting DVD player. with the click of a button it shows 480p, 720p, 768p and 1080i.
Am I correct to assume that you are saying my panasonic will show a black screen if I put it on the 720 or 768 modes.

Also when you say that it shows 480p and 1080i natively, do you mean that this TV will show 1920x1080. If so that would be incredible, because as far as I have learned no plasmas, LCD, or LCD/DLP Projection do 1080i native.

Randy the reason what you said "Pannys won't input or upconvert 720p however" is really DISTURBING me, is because that is what I read about a certain Samsung tube tv, in a AV magazine. They said it showed a black screen on 720p.

I must say I am very proud to work for Panasonic. I wouldnt have kept the job if it was for Sony or anyone else. I have learned alot of inside stuff about their plasma production, I can tell you their plan is to go for market domination. In september they had 50% of plasma sales in the US. Their 50" is 1000$ less than Pioneer. And this isnt my opinion either, at every store in my district all the employees recomend Panny plasma over sony, lg, pioneer etc.

So it dissapoints me with all the advantages this tv has, why panasonic didnt try to rise above the others.

Do they just not care about Tube TVs anymore???

Randy, am I correct to assume you are saying that if my source doesnt change 720 to 1080 or 480 it will show nothing?
Do you know this for sure? What is your source?
I am considering to buy and return the HDMI Samsung 841 and see what it does :P

thanks again guys!

They know for the general hdtv watcher, that 480p/1080i will be more than enough to satisfy. Most if not all HDTV set top boxes will output to 720p OR 1080i so you will be fine there.

Yes, your upconverting dvd player will show a black screen, just set it to 1080i. Panasonic is one of the few that DON'T upconvert all signals (720p) to 1080i, but it doesn't matter anyway if you can set the output of your cable boxes, dvd players, xbox's, toasters to 1080i.

A regular 480i TV has a horizontal scan rate of 15,750 khz. The horizontal scan rate for 480p is 31,500 khz and 1080i is 33,750 khz. The scan rate for 720p is 45,000 khz. This is so fast that it is very hard for an electron gun based tube to keep up. It would be very expensive to produce a picture tube and set that could do 720p and since all set top boxes will upconvert the 720p to 1080i all the manufactures of tube sets droped 720p four years ago. By the way the original 34 inch Panasonic that was released in 1999 did do 720p and it cost way over $4000. They dropped 720p when they came out with the CT34WX50 which I bought in 2001 and still love. :)
