I currently have the Infocus 4805 with a phillip divx player, running over components. Would and upscaling dvd player hook up via DVI show much PQ improvement?

I been thinking about getting something like the DVB318 but are unsure if is worth the trouble.

Thanks

himpact,

I had a 4805 mated with the Philips DVP642 and moved up to the OPPO and was very happy with the results. The main advantages to moving to the Zenith DVB318 is a much better motion adaptive de-interlacing, a more accurate D/A video DAC, much higher color accuracy, and the sound quality will beat the living crap out of the Philips.

I would not hesitate to recommend to you the Zenith DVB318 (upscaling) or the Pioneer 588A (solid 480p and great audio solution - plays DVD-A/SACD).

HMMMM?!?!? Since the 4805 is a 480p PJ, wouldn't a signal higher that 480p be down scaled by the PJ? Would it even accept it?

Now if you're talking a higher quality DVD player or DVI vs component, there potential for PQ improvement.

I have the same phillip dvd player right now.
Are you using DVI input with the OPPO?

I'm thinking of upgrading to a DVD PLayer with HDMI or DVI.

PAW,

The projector would re-scale to fit its native resolution. Even at 480p, the picture was much better for the reasons I listed in my first post. You won't get the advantage of moving up to higher resolutions, but the simple addition of good motion adaptive de-interlacing greatly increases the visual clarity.

himpact,

Yes, I purchased the M1-DVI adapter so I could use the OPPO through the DVI output (component is the OPPO's weakest link). I was very happy with the setup (until I moved up to the Optoma H78).

For 480p PJ's, there is ZERO benefit from an upscaling player, you cant take advantage of it. But a better player with better 480 performance will definitely help....many/most of the solid performing upscalers are also pretty decent in 480i/p output as well....compared to your Phillips 642?, it should be night and day, that player is pretty poor. Its popular due to its low cost and ability to play DivX files, people arent buying it because its a great performing player...

You should get a little better quality picture with an 480P using DVI or HDMI cable instead of the Component RGB. I get a sharpness increase when using the Oppo at 720P on my native 720 PJ, not sure if the digital signal over the DVI-D cable or the Oppo scalar is giving me the sharpness increase on my PE7700.

I don't think I would choose the Oppo for your 4805 as the Oppo does not do 480P over Component RGB, just 480P over DVI. I think the Zenith does 480P over component and HDMI as well, this would allow you to decide if the 4805 or the DVD player had a better scalar.

Good luck

Well I was planning to use the DVI connection, not the component.
It seem there wont be much upgrade in getting a upscaling dvd player for the 4805?

Many upscaling players are also great 480p players.

Have there been any previous threads regarding opinions on the best DVD player for the 4805? I just want the best PQ for $200 or under, regardless of upconverting or not.

Here is a rather long discussion about The Perfect DVD Player for Infocus 4850 (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=538764).
Here is a search for Infocus 4805 and DVD Player (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/search.php?searchid=1422119) headers I did in the Projector threads.

The OPPO OPDV971H was highly recommended in many of these threads.
