are you mainly looking at 30" CRTs
the Sony KV30HS420 is 799 and the Panasonic CT30WX15 has been found for 650

unforunately the 34" from both companies is over a thousand along with the 30" Super Fine Pitch Sony KD30XS955
but it would be the closest with Crutchfield listing it at 1099, which is hard to beat considering their is no taxes and free shipping
you would pay easily that much on taxes and shipping on any 1000 dollar TV

good luck

I just picked up a CT30WX15 from CC and i like it. THe picture looks good with SD and my Xbox games are also looking very clean. I can't wait to get my 360 so i can see some real HD on my TV.

Methinks rob is making reference to the Dark Ages of TV.....complete with horizontal sweep tubes that used to give off a 15kHz "buzz" when they were about to bite the dust....! ;) Rest assured.....any "snap-crackle-pop" eminating from a modern television receiver generally signals trouble...About the only real "noise" from a CRT (that's considered "normal"....) is a short static burst when the set is first powered ON (auto degaussing)....Is this what you were/are referring to, rob?

To me I guess its more of a ringing, some people hear it some dont, Ive been told its generated from large coil windings.

That's the 15khz buzz of the windings when driven at an SD 15khz rate. Hd sets won't have this problem because the scanrates are much higher and well outside your hearing range. I too hear this on SD displays, drives me nuts, rest assured HD sets will be silent except for any that use fans (mainly digitals). A relative of mine just got a toshiba 30 inch for 700 or 799 or something, I will be calibrating it shortly, haven't seen it yet, i'm sure it will look fine. I do notice that toshibas tend to have slightly underperforming power supplies at least on their SD sets compared to say sony, i'll have to take a peek at this toshiba and see what it's like. I expect it and most all the others to have red push which pisses me off. I don't follow consumer displays basically at all, but for the holidays everyone's asking me about what TV to buy, but nobody has $10K to spend so I gotta catch up fast ;)

if you're good at talking with salespeople, you can pricematch the KV30HS420 from $800 to just under $600 at Sears, if you print out the price from outpost.com and tell them that it's Fry's Online store.
