For you little leaguers out there Nolan Bushnell along with Ralph Baer are hugely responsible for where we are in gaming today having launched the 2600 Atari and Pong, respectively.
So Nolan B.Likes the controller. Get happy!

I think what he means is that from a button input standpoint they are too complicated where as with this control it responds to your natural movements that you already do.
It's the layouts and button input he was referring to. Those controllers were similar on the coleco and intellivision and looked more like phones than game controllers. When you compared them to the Atari or what was available in arcaded at the time they were more complicated.

Well . . . IMO the only game that really used the keyboard effectively on the Intellivision (keep in mind . . . I haven't played every game) was Baseball. That game used the keyboard brilliantly.
On the Coleco side . . . I can't remember a single game that I played that used the keyboard for anything other then selecting how many players were to play.

The pad was underused on the colecovision. Let's not leave out the Magnavox Odyssey 2 which was the first console with a full keyboard.

Colecovision Mouse Trap - perhaps the most unergomatic game ever. Now you start with the Colecovision joystick - which suked in general and required two hands to work. So where do get the third hand to open/close the colored gates? Simultaneous use of the joystick and keypad was near impossible, which is probably one of the main reasons so few games used the keypad.

The Arcade adapter really helped with things like that. It was a trackball with the action buttons on it and two controllers slid into the sides allowing you to have an "arcade" experience.
