I own the kv-30hs420, and when a dark figure comes into contact with anything lighter than it, it leaves like a ghosty blur on the left edge of the screen where it comes into contact with it. Like when I was watching Monday night football and John Madden's black suit came into contact with the stadium background, the whole left edge of the screen turned into a ghosty white and extended for about 2 inches rightward and then stopped. I have no idea what this is... can any of you guys help me, or have any idea? I didn't buy a 5 year warranty for nothing, if I can't fix this myself then Sony will be replacing it or fixing it, it's a distraction and I refuse to take "within specs" for an answer. Thanks guys!!

I am just noticing the same ghosting/smearing/streaking/trailing problem on my 30HS420 as well. It appears to happen when a high contrast light area moves away form a dark area (or as you said dark area meets light area). See my post about Phospher decay for my symptoms. I'd like to know why this happens to. I thought CRTs didn't have smearing problems like LCDs do.

I have the 34" version of this model and I've never seen anything like this. I highly recommend you exchange it for another. The reason I recommend an exchange is that it seems once Sony accepts and shows for a trouble call, you're somewhat caught in a repair mode, and possibly locked-out of an exchange option. I'm not sure about this, it just seems this way.

But I would surely do something - this just doesn't sound right.

this is really weak Sony, I expected better for the 800 dollars it was at the time. I don't just spend $800 and get crap like this. How good are the Sony people that come to your house, do any of you know? It's too bad I just noticed this recently, I got the tv back in July, but thankfully I got the 5 year warranty, I doubt ABC will take it back, what do you guys reccomend I do, call Sony? Thanks!

I exchanged 3 Samsung 26" TX models because they all did this. Some worse than others. It's very annoying. The only way I could minimize is was to set the contrast very low it makes it less noticable but it's still there under extreme conditions.

I thought it was just Samsung sets.

You'll need to make use of that warranty since the 30 day return window has passed. I recommend that you document every telephone conversation and the outcome of every repair effort so that you can get their attention before this becomes a circus. Just stay on them and stay in control of the repair as much as possible.
