what is upscaling or an upconversion player

what is upscaling or upconversion player, and I read that you can install the latest version of filmware on DVD player, is that like how Microsoft windows makes new updates for you computer, I am new and confused, please help

Welcome to AVS. Although you have worked your way up tp 22 posts, you might not have read many/all of the threads.

At the top of the forum are some Sticky threads. I have copied links of two which will shed a great deal of light on what's going on with upscaling players.

If improved picture quality were only as simple as adding 22" rims with spinners, dual 18" folded kickers and neon lighting below the player for AV shelf ground effect.

If converting a 480i DVD source into a 720p/1080i HD output were easy, we would have far fewer threads. Alas it's as much art as it is science. Some player performance is conditional on the display being used.

Is it all worth the effort? Yes. Atleast until the release of real HD media and players.
