I just got a Samsung HL-R6768W 1080p

We are getting a Def Tech system soon and I can not figure out what I want for an amp/dvd player video signal wise.

We have a RCA ip-900 digital set-top box (POS has no digital video outs) Will be getting a new dvd player, and a reciever. I was looking at the Yamaha 5990, but it only has 480p up conversion, but the tv also does its own conversion. If I get a DVD player that will upconvert to 720p/1080i, I would have to connect it directly to the tv correct? Or I could get a reciever that will do 720p/1080i and go through it? What would retain the best video quality? If connected the DVD player to the tv, I would have to use components to the tv and optical to the reciever?

All the components in the system will be a DVD player, our Panisonic DVD/VHS combo for regular vhs tapes, the set-top box (will probably have hdmi/component video in the future) a reciever, and the tv.

I attached a diagram, I think going with the HTR-5990 will be fine since I dont have alot of input signals, but what do you guys think?

You can connect the DVD player to the receiver which will pass thru what ever signal fed it. It will also convert the signal up to HDMI if it is something lower (component, s-video, etc). I have my HD Tivo hooked up to my Yammie HTR-5990 HDMI to HDMI and it passes the 1080i signal to my pj. MY DVD is component and the receiver changes it to HDMI. I use a HDMI cable that has DVI on the end going to my pj. Dennis

So it will allow anything higher then 480p to pass through, and 480i it up-converts to 480p?

Also does it have HDMI/Component switching? So I can have one HDMI going to the tv and multiple coming in to the reciever.

Thanks.

Yes, you are correct. Multiple in, one HDMI out. Plus, I bought a high quality 50ft HDMI cable so I could put the equipment in a storage room, and the signal seems great. I tested it using PIP and a 3 ft dvi/hdmi cable directly from my cable box on one side and through the 5990 with the 50ft hdmi on the other, and the side with the long cable actually looked better to me. The color was brighter and the image was a little sharper, though the text wasn't quite as smooth. So I was pretty happy. I haven't tested it with the DVD player yet, I bought an upscaling 400 disk DVD changer by Sony.
