View Full Version : Bad Tuner, Refurb 4508, Miss Anything?

I bought one of the latest round of refurb 4500 for a Christmas gift. When my son set it up in his apartment, he couldn't get any video from the basic cable to appear on the TV.

By phone, I advised him to double check that the Cable was good by plugging it directly into the tv, and change channels on the TV. It was OK.
I had him re-do the System setup to redefine the Ant/Cable input was assigned to his cable system.
I had him try the common 4-5-7 channels in the area that would have been standard.
I had him do a factory default reset on the RTV and repeated al of the above.

He get the RTV menus and when he changes the channel he gets the show banner information so the output from the RTV is working OK.
It seems to be the tuner on the replay that is at issue.

I'm hoping I don't have to RMA the unit as heaven knows if they have any replacements, so I'm looking for any similar experience from the crew here and if there was any trick that I could try to breath life into the unit.

Thanks
Cliff

There isn't much that can go wrong in setup. Make sure the cable is connected to the top RF connector. In setup select "none" for input 1 and 2. Ant/Catv must be setup to his local service.

The bottom line is irregardless of how setup is configured, it must tune to channel 3 when RF3 is selected. I do that using the "input" button on my 3000/showstopper remote. The 4000 remote may have the same button or perhaps it can be selected through menu/setup/input.

Slightly Off Topic - My new theory on the last round of refurbs is that somebody at DNNA realized that a significant number of the devices in their "returns" pile were either working units being returned by people too stupid to own a DVR, or units with failures that could easily be repaired in the field by the likes of us AVSForum members (i.e. reimage the hard drive or buy a part from Mikeyboy). Instead of wasting time/money paying some employee to "fix" the devices in the return pile, it was much more cost effective to sell them to the public. This will result in them being able to seperate the wheat from the chaff at little or no expense (shipping costs at most). After the new owners volunteer their time to identify the truly failing units, the manager at DNNA will be able to decide whether or not it is worth having ReplayLyndon train somebody to actually repair/refurbish the remaining inventory of field diagnosed devices. I know the 2 refurbs I purchased looked like the hard drives had been slapped in the box by a poorly trained monkey, and my experience is not unique. Others in the forum have reported similar "quality" issues.

Back On Topic - I don't know about the 45XX design, but with any luck Mikeyboy can fix you up with a tuner replacement at a reasonable costs to secure full functionality in this otherwise unavailable technology.

Ok, I plan on driving down to his place today, and I'll bring my remote so I can test the input to see if channel 3 psses through or not.

Update: DNNA RMA'd it. It's on the way back to Waco.

Thanks.
