View Full Version : 42" too small, 50" too big, is there a quality plasma in-between?
I know there's a PDP-4312 Pioneer. Money isn't necessarily an object, since I was ready to spend my cash on a 50" Pioneer Elite Plasma until I discovered that it's just a smidge too big for the spot I have picked out.
Thanks.

The REAL reason there are not any "Quality" displays between 43-inches and 50-inches is so the Video Display companies can maintain their margins on the 50-inchers--they couldn't do that if there was say a "Quality" 46-inch Plasma out there.
There are some Budget Chinese 46-inch EDTV Plasmas out there but most have pretty bad contrast ratios.
I've often wondered why all the other Plasma Manufacturers let Pioneer have all of the 43-inch market while they settle on 42-inchers. Pioneer has made alot of money off that one extra inch.
To equal the vertical height of a 36-inch Direct-view 4:3 set you have to have a 16:9 Plasma set of at least 44-inches. A 46-inch 1024X768 set would make sense--but I guess the Plasma Display manufacturers like selling 42-inchers--people don't notice too much drop in vertical height when moving up in size from a 36-inch Direct-view 4:3 CRT set and then increasing their margins a little by making 50-inch sizes the next possible step up.

Thanks.[/QUOTE]There are several excellent 50" plasmas with a smaller O.D. than the Pioneer (with and without speakers). Why not just get one of them?

Can you list them please. Smaller than the 5060 and pro-1130 right? The only one that I can think of off the top of my head is the Fujitsu.

ekote,
You can't fit it with or without the speakers? Exactly how much room do you have?
Between 42 and 50", I owned a 46" Deawoo (before getting my current Panny 50") and was very happy with it, great picture and can be had for under 2k at Sams Club and other places.

I have 45" of length to work with. I would easily sacrifice built in speakers for screen real estate. I'm going to perch it on top of some sort of cabinet, but here's the rub-it has to be set in the corner of our room. I, being a foolish and vainglorious human, wanted a Pioneer for the cachet. But to be honest, I would consider any highly-rated set. I'm willing to pay extra for a quality name.
Thanks for your help.
A Pioneer 4360 or 930 is only 42 3/8" wide without the speakers.

Is the 930 worth the extra cash? I'm planning on this being the last TV I buy for a looooong time. 50%TV/35%DVDs/15%Xbox360

2 words....
HELL YEAH!!!!
I have the same dilemma.
What would be the maximum for a 48" space? I have a media cabinet that is 48W X 38h X 24d. The initial width is 48", but after the 1 inch frame, it opens up to almost 50". I was thinking the commerical Panasonic TH-50PHD8UK, which is 47.6" in width. Technically it will fit, but I'm worried about cooling. In other threads, some people mention wiring up some fans. Is there a way to get a fan to kick on when the TV is turned on?
