View Full Version : Will 1080p trickle down to 32-inch LCDs?

Right now the smallest 1080p sets are 37-inch, correct? Does that mean we'll see 32-inch 1080p sets in a year or two? It looks like the 2006 Sharps (according to Mike53) will have 1080p (the "D90" line) only down to 37 inches.
My guess is that it might not be worth waiting for anyway, that at some point the law of diminishing returns sets in, and at a viewing distance of, say, 6 to 8 feet, there's not much to gain over 720p in a 32-inch set.

You can today buy an Apple Cinema 30 inch that has 2560x1600, and a few 24 inch that are 1920x1200, so it is certainly possible to make the pixels that size. Now granted by and large these don't have HDCP and a few other niceties. You're squarely in the -- you can see the difference -- no you can't -- debate that we see in other threads, played against whether it is sensible to market 1080p at those sizes.

I think the issue is how close you sit. Lots of people use LCD sets for computer monitors and a 1080P 32" LCD set would be appreciated by this crowd. 32" is a good size for a desktop monitor. Speakers are nicely placed too.
32" is headed toward commodity pricing and therefore the engineering stops. 32" is the new 27" 4X3 CRT of 2004. Other than specialty computer monitors, I doubt if you will see and 1080P 32' TV's. (I could be wrong. I never make mistakes. I thought I did once, but I was mistaken!)
Might as well get this if you want it for a computer monitor too. it's also HDCP capable.

I dont see how people are using these 32" models as monitors...Are people blind or what? I tried it on mine and It didnt tickle my fancy...Im content with a 19" as a monitor....32" is perfect for a television (although that depends on the distance and size of a room of course)

I agree (I work from home a lot), I attempted to work for 8 hours on a 32" a couple weeks ago, and I had the worst headache at the end of the day. I switched back to my 18", and I felt much better.

Yeah the only way I can deem it acceptable would be for gaming and that would be a bit iffy because as close as people sit to monitors these days it would be a nightmare...
Im content with a monitor the size of my head that is all within my viewing distance..

I believe that 1080p panels will penetrate to all sizes eventually. Due to the LCD monitor market 1080p capable glass is already being made in sizes all the way down to 15". Someone will eventually make TVs out of this glass. Maybe not soon but it will eventually happen.

Sitting right next to that 40" makes the 32" look TINY...I hate retails selling technique they always place the small tvs right next to a larger one which makes the customer want the larger one...BS I say BS...:) Excuse my rant but my 32" looks huge in my room...
With lcd resolutions doing 1366x768 though I do think 1080p will be coming shortly probably be revealed at CES or available later in the year...But I probably still cant see a huge difference...I cant tell a difference from 720p to 1080i...Although I am sure a difference would be seen on a set larger than 50" though.

Yes, or almost blind, :-). There are sight problems that cannot be just fixed with lenses or surgery. I've been trying different thing thru the years and I came to the conclusion that bigger pixels is the solution, at least for me.
A 26" LCD TV (1366x768) as computer monitor is much easier on my poor sight than my current 20" LCD (1600x1200).
However I just can't give up on resolution. If I did, my work tools just won't fit in the screen. 1920x1080 in a 30" or 32" display is an acceptable tradeoff.
If Samsung comes out with that 32" LCD full HD, which I believe they mean 1920x1080, and they price it right, it might be just what I need.
almost like this?
