I came home from the celebration to find my 5040 on and nothing happening. The blue button was on but that was it. After checking everything, it is like it is lockedup. Holding power in eventualy turns it off, but it comes right back on. Unplugging it works, and I hear the HD spin up when I plug it back in, but nothing. Just a black screen and that is it...
Anyone know if there was a bad update went around? Or have any trouble shootign advice?
Thanks!
Start by unplugging everything from the unit and waiting 5 min. Then plug everythign back in except the network cord.
Sounds like a scary situation, but the above is still the first step.
There were no "bad updates", so you don't have to worry about that.
If the first step doesn't work, move on to the detailed trouble-shooting tips at www.replaytvupgrade.com to diagnose your problem.
More often then not, this symptom leads to replacing the hard drive, with an optional effort to extract your old recorded programs to a DVArchive server.

I just had the same problem. If you are using the cable output to your TV, you will get a black screen with a HD problem. If you try the s-video or the composite video, you will see the dreaded please wait screen basically telling you there is a hard drive problem.

When that happened to me, the trouble was that the unit was completely full of dust bunnies. Vucuumed it clean and it came back to full operation. Crak it open and take a look. Larry :)
Perhaps your unit is not Y2K.6 compliant?

mine died over the weekend too :( i unplugged it thinking i should let it reset itself, then brought back up and overnight it crashed again. i've replaced the hard drive since then as well and it still crashed about 1.5 hours later. it'll no longer turn on, unless i unplug it for a while and then turn it back on... this sucks. any ideas?

Check all the power connectors, and look for loose or tarnished (browned) metal. It's a fairly common problem where the connectors aren't making good contact, and need cleaning and/or refitting.
The connectors you should check include that little rainbow cable between the power supply and the motherboard. You should pull, clean, and reseat every connector.

Thanks for the ideas, it would be great if it's as simple as that! If not, I went to Fry's and bought the second to last 5508. I'll give the cleaning and reseating a try as soon as I can.
