View Full Version : Help! My DVD player won't read DVDs

Hi all,

My Toshiba SD-3805 had been working fine for a couple of years. I turned it on the other day and it was stuck: the carousel wouldn't move, and it wouldn't open to allow me to insert a disc. I finally managed to open it up and determined that the reading mechanism was stuck in play position. I was able to force that back to where it should be, and now the carousel is working again, but in the process, I probably did something to the lens or something, because now it won't read any of my DVDs. The strange thing is, it reads CDs just fine, and plays them just fine, but every DVD is rejected with a "Disc Error" message.

Technically, what's the difference between reading a DVD and a CD? Is there another lens for DVDs that I somehow got dust on or misaligned or something?

The unit is well out of warranty, so I'm relying on my limited repair skills (I'm good at software, but not so much at hardware!). Nevertheless, I'd rather not replace it if I don't have to. :( Any suggestions?

By the way, I tried to run a CD lens cleaner on the unit, and that ran fine -- I don't have one specifically for DVDs, but I see those are out there on the market. Is that worth a try, or is what I already have the same thing?

Thanks so much for your help!
