Nice that they've added some BDs but sad that they include the word "DVD" in the search results after each title and each title's page lists "edition: DVD." Let's confuse consumers into thinking they're getting some kind of new edition of DVD like a Superbit, yeah that'll work.
Great to see any titles proposed, BUT I have seen 32 of these. The only one I am really interested in is AEON FlUX! What % will I re-rent or re-purchase?
Why aren't the studios at least suggesting what new titles will be released? Even if it is just smoke. It would generate more interest.

Then maybe you don't know much about it. ;)

"It was so uncomfortable to watch this film, I felt like I was desperately holding back a bout of extreme diarrhea while having dinner with my girlfriend's folks for the first time."
-- Kevin Carr, 7M PICTURES
"To put it succinctly 'Aeon Flux' sucks!"
-- Jackie K. Cooper, JACKIEKCOOPER.COM
"Charlize Theron has her Oscar. Now she has her Catwoman."
-- David Frese, KANSAS CITY STAR
For those of us who have been watching movies for years (especially HD recordings) the day-and-date stuff may end up being the most exciting and I think a lot of that hasn't been announced.

Well ya, I see what you mean, BUT I have an incurable crush on Charlize. What can I say
I too have been enjoying Hd movies from HDNET and INHD. Great stuff! I must have about 30 loaded on external SATA drives connected to my 8300HD DVR. DUNE and Man on Fire are favorites.
I totally agree with the day-and-date issue. It is just hard to just sit here and WAIT :D

It is. It's Blu-Ray Discs. BD. You drop the R. That's what the BDA wants the moniker to be.

It really should be BRD.

I like the R and like BR better, but it is the BDA's format and they decided to drop it. Not to mention that if it does win the format war and does become the next popular format most people won't even know what BD stands for. Since the logo has only a B and a D on it. the same way that no one goes around saying digital versatile disk.

A flashback to DVD-V/Audio a couple of years back...
Blu-Ray Video Discs = BVDs
Blu-Ray Audio Discs = BADs
:D:D:D I could just imagine it... BAD BVDs....

Then they'd have problem selling it in the Bundes Republik Deutschland (Federal Republic of Germany). :D
BD-J isn't any better. It keeps reminding me of PB&J. The sign on the Panasonic player at CES that reads "Powered by BD-J" makes me think "It's powered by peanut butter and jelly? I want one of those!"
We are so off the original topic. :D

I just sent this suggestion to the Amazon site:
I know it's early for any info, but one important item I'd like to see is whether this (or any) Blu-ray (or HD-DVD) disc's "ICT flag" is set. If so, it will make the disc player send no-so-high-definition video out the component jacks. For the many people using those connections to their TVs, a disc whose ICT flag is set will *not* be high definition at all. Just like the Region Code tells me that I can't play a disc here from "over there", the ICT flag tells me analog video connections will be "down-rezzed" to a lower resolution.
Surprised Sony didn't have Spider-man and Spider-man 2 in there since those movies are their top box office hits.

Sony's probably waiting until ealry '07 to release the Spiderman films, there's that odd deal of cross promotion for the little sequel next year.
In the same vein, I assume once they get going with releases, we might see some Bond films late this year or sometime next year when the next film is released to the home market.

Well I would buy both Total Recall and Fifth Element .
However look at Amazons HD DVD list (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/browse/-/16295741/ref=amb_right-2_145616601_2/103-7856635-3884617) :
U2 - Rattle & Hum [HD DVD]
The Italian Job (2003) [HD DVD]
Four Brothers [HD DVD]
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider [HD DVD]
Sahara [HD DVD]
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow [HD DVD]
Aeon Flux (2005) [HD DVD]
The Manchurian Candidate (2004) [HD DVD]
Braveheart [HD DVD]
The Ultimate Star Trek Movie Collection [HD DVD]
The Bourne Supremacy [HD DVD]
We Were Soldiers [HD DVD]
Band of Brothers [HD DVD]
Seven [HD DVD]
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy [HD DVD]
Batman Begins [HD DVD]

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire [HD DVD]
Terminator 3 [HD DVD]
The Aviator [HD DVD]
The Matrix Trilogy [HD DVD]
Doom [HD DVD]

The 40 Year Old Virgin [HD DVD]
Cinderella Man [HD DVD]
The Chronicles of Riddick [HD DVD]
Van Helsing [HD DVD]
U-571 [HD DVD]
Apollo 13 [HD DVD]
Out of that I'd buy the LOTR trilogy, The Matrix Trilogy, Harry Potter, The STar Trek movies and Batman Begins.
I was leaning towards Blue Ray but if I were buying tomorrow based on these titles I'd go with HD DVD instead.

Matrix and Batman Begins have been scheduled as part of the Blu-ray launch.
LOTR and Harry Potter are Warner/New Line. Expect them to be announced soon.
Star Trek movies are Paramount. Same thing.
As long as you can live without King Kong, you'll be fine.
I was leaning towards Blue Ray but if I were buying tomorrow based on these titles I'd go with HD DVD instead.
Then you would be making an uninformed decision. Not all of the announced titles for either format are listed on Amazon. In addition, some of the titles on Amazon have not been announced yet.
I wish details like encoding were made available, as well as SL vs DL on the launch titles. As it stands though, it appears that the majority of the HD DVD titles will launch with better PQ then the majority of BD launch titles. Over time, we'll most likely see the PQ difference phase out, or disappear if studios supporting dual formats release the same encoded version on both formats. But until the majority of BD titles are DL 50GB mpeg2 _OR_ mpeg4 avc hp 25GB, I worry that the VC-1 HD DVD titles will look superior.
And now the 42 are now grouped in their own "store" like HD DVD.

I don't think we will see much PQ difference on the dual format releases that would allow for a direct comparision. I can't see the studios wanting to pay to encode their film more than once.
I think they will go for the lowest common demoninator and work to a 25GB limit (assuming single layer BDs) and a single codec for both formats. Of course this may mean you get more extras on a dual layer HD-DVD if the studio wants to fill the left over space.

Kurt
Kurt and others,
keep in mind that WB/Live have stated that they will release EVERY title on HD DVD on Blu-ray as well as soon as production is ready. So if you can wait a few months longer you don't have to buy an HD DVD player as there will be NO HD DVD EXLUSIVES (except by Universal at this time).

Ughhh, I would be totally ready to wait only for Bluray if it weren't for Universal. I need my HD Kong! :(

I wouldn't want all the big TV and movie titles out at once. All these new codecs need to mature a little, so we get the audio and video quality we crave. And I still am quite warry of MPEG-2 at such low bitrates. You need a 50 GB disc with high bitrates to make MPEG-2 look great.
The first titles, like DVD at launch, probably will not be good indicators of what Blu-Ray COULD be like in a year. I'm willing to bite on titles that live up to the hype.
Dan
Does anyone have any idea when Day-and-Date releases will become available?
Even a good guess?
Or do the studios want to try and sell this old back catalog drek for months?... LOL
Digital Video Disc, damnit. :D
What does DVD mean? from Official DVDForum.org (http://www.dvdforum.org/faq-dvdprimer.htm#1) The keyword is "versatile."
But then - frankly, it does not really matter whether its video or versatile! - who cares! It's yesterday's format. Can't wait to see BD or HD DVD. HD - what a visual experience!
I find that some HDnet programs are much better than TNT HD. Particularly those produced by HD net.
Can someone explain as to what the effective bit rate is for the HD from Satellites VS HD over the Air VS BD? My understnding is that the satellite HD is further compressedl, even though all of it is mpeg-2. Is that true?
If BD is 25 to 30 mpbs, what is the effective rate of OTA transmission. Frankly, I don't understand the technology or terminology completely. Please excuse me if I did not pose the question correctly.
The reason behind the question: DVD is supposed to have upto 10 mbps. Superbit versions are the only ones who go high (as high as 8 or 9?). For what ever reason, not all DVD producers max out the MBPS (alternate language/audio/pan&Scan options etc.).
Based on the technical info, can I lookforward to a BD picture better than HDNET? Actually, can it be better than OTA? Frankly, I don't know if OTA is better or worse than HDNET (inspite of satellite providers reducing the bandwith or what ever its called for satellite transmission).
Of course, I am hoping that the 1080p would be even more impressive than 1080i (1080i itself being great!). Frankly, I can't really tell the difference in quality between 1080i (nbc/cbs) and 720p (ABC) on my 9" CRT projector.
Looks like Amazon is up to 52 Blu Ray titles....now we just need players and actual software :)

Who said they were?....this is a pre order /notify me when available list of upcoming but no official release date titles.
They're certainly not release DATE titles but those titles have been listed as launch titles.
I don't believe that they're some kind of unofficial petition either!! Like it says, they just notify you when pre-order starts. Although they still haven't done so for the BD titles other sites are already accepting pre-orders
