New to this forum and haven't quite figured out the dynamics of searching. Forgive me if this has already been covered.

I have a newly minted 42PX50U. There's an electronic whine coming from the speakers. It's loud enough that even with my dodgy hearing I can hear it over the audio. If I turn the audio volume down to zero, or turn the speakers off in setup, I still hear the noise.

Is anybody else having this problem?

I have the same tv and have never noticed any noise, even when I've been up close to it with the sound down.

A whine noise is not normal so i'd consider that to be a defect and you should have the set replaced. Mine makes no such noise even when i get to within a few inches.

Quick update. I was flipping among programs and noticed that the volume and type of noise was directly dependent on the type of signal. Normal 480i produced little noise, while 1080i was the worst and loudest.

Yep. Even with all the audio inputs disconnected, the speaker volume set to zero, and the speakers turned off in setup, it makes the noise. I put my ear right in front of the speaker holes, so the noise is either being induced in the speakers by the panel, or there's a noisy component located directly behind the speakers.

I think maybe I'll go up to my local BB and do the ear-to-panel test there to give a little more info on whether it's just my panel or a bad production run (provided they don't throw me out for putting ear prints on their display models).

Did the BB ear test. It was too loud in the store for anything definitive. I did hear some noise, but I think if it was as bad as on my unit, I wouldn't have had to strain to hear it.

I have the thing on an APS battery backup and surge supressor. However, I don't know how well it works on dirty power. Could that be causing the problem? My subwoofer was making noise until I plugged it directly into the amp instead of the wall.

I thought I'd resurrect this old thread. I have a brand new 50" Panny (50PX60U) that is exhibiting this issue.

There is a warbled whine coming from both speakers. It doesn't matter if the volume is turned all the way down, or even if you turn off the speakers in the Audio menu, the sound is still there.

It's very audible even at moderate listening volumes and especially during quite scenes. It totally detracts from my enjoyment of the TV.

I did figure out a way to get it to stop though. Normally I have it on the component input from my receiver. But I hit Channel UP on the TV remote and it turns to channel 2 and displays static for a few seconds before the TV recognizes there is no signal and displays a black screen instead. At this point, the sound will stop and I can switch it back to the component input. No more whine. But I have to do this every time I turn on the TV.

I wonder if I should call Panasonic? or the retailer, Best Buy?
