I never noticed this before as I've never really had a need to, but when viewing 480p material (such as on DVDs) through an interlaced conversion (upscale I'm assuming), there is a strong black bar at the top with an all black screen. This happens with my KV-30HS420 Sony.

Anyone else with this Sony notice this? Any fixes or reasons why this happens? Could it perhaps be my DVD player?

more than likely its the aperature grill wires
all Sony CRT tubes have them
they hold the aperature grill in place

I have a KV32HS420 and I am having a problem with using an Oppo upscaling DVD player via the HDMI. The TV seems to do verticle compression on any signal it gets from the Oppo that is greater than 480P so if I play any 4:3 material the picture is squished. I went into the Sony menu and the 16:9 enhanced menu option was grayed out Auto. Does anyone else have trouble using the 420 series with a upscaling DVD player? I have tried the DVD player set to 16:9,4:3LB and 4:3PS but the picture is still VC when using 720P and 1080i.

720p and 1080i are widescreen thats your problem, set your DVD to 480p or 480i

Having to change modes before every DVD seems like too much... My Samsung HD set does not have this problem even with the output always set to 1080i...

so you are saying that your samsung will automatically go into a zoom mode with 4:3 content outputted at 1080i?

or is your samsung a widescreen TV?

I have the 34" version of your set and have seen this before with my Oppo upconversion player, and other set-ups as well.

Quite often dvd players employ black level adjustments, sometimes even as default settings. Go to the dvd player first and turn off any such adjustments. Also, try adjusting the black level (brightness) on your tv set under the same conditions and see what happens.

No it is also a 32" but I just realized that it gives me the option of Nomal, 16:9 (Enhanced) and zoom. With 4:3 I just set it to normal but the Sony does not give me the same options I only get normal and zoom it seems that I can not disable the 16:9 Enhanced mode... I only get the option of Auto and On which are grayed out when in 720P and 1080i.

yeah the HS420 series does not get the zoom options for HD sources
the XS955 and XBR960 series do though
