View Full Version : If you were on the fence, what film...?

If you were on the fence about purchasing a Blu-ray player (like I), what film(s) would get you to convert in a heartbeat if released (or announced) on the format?

I know this may sound ridiculous, but if the original 1978 Dawn of the Dead was announced, I'd be making sure I have my credit card in my wallet while driving to the store the next day.

The film was actually the catalyst for me initially jumping into the LD and DVD formats many moons ago. :D

Bond, James Bond.
I want to see Halle Berry's peach fuzz in the bathing suit from the last Bond Film. Also, Swordfish, Excalibur (whoops, I think that is Universal), The Entire Pink Panther films (including Return of the PP that was left out of the DVD box Set, I am still pissed about that)
Battle of the Bulge, Where Eagles Dare, The Longest Day, Star Trek DS9 Box Set, Force 10 from Navarone, Bladerunner, owe and Star Wars.

For HD-DVD I would like to see LOTR, Battlestar Galactica (new version) and Matrix.

I think the Bond Films that were restored at Lowry Studios are going to be incredible.
I am going to buy a BR player and the entire box set of the Films the day they are announced and launched.
Here is a link about the restoration.

It's pretty easy for me. Before I go with either format, they have to have at least two of the movie sets, and at least two of the TV sets.
Movies: Star Wars (all six of course), The Lord of the Ring, Star Trek (all 10 titles).
TV: Law & Order (the original), ER, HouseMD.

That's really all there is to it. ANy split jobs or incomplete circles is unacceptable to me.

That's just the sofware side. ;)

The obvious flux and instability on the hardware side, for both brands, is a completely different matter altogether.

Bottom line: It's your all too typical first generation/early adopter/pay-premium-dollars-to-be-glorified-beta-testers situation all the way, to a tee.

It's the movies you haven't seen yet which will decide things. New releases are the killer apps. As people are fond of pointing out, few are primarily interested in replacing their DVDs.

Will "Superman" or "The Da Vinci Code" be THE must haves of 2006?

Well, I'm with Blu Ray already. So Universal would have to release something exclusive. Can't think of anything they have off hand(Serenity and King Kong for new stuff) that would pull me away from Blu Ray. It's a moot point anyway, since they'll have to cave to Blu Ray eventually.

Lord of the Rings, Matrix, Nightmare on Elm Street collection, Star Wars, Star Trek movies, Die Hard, Lethal Weapon etc, are all stuff I'd pick a format for, and Blu Ray will have all of those.

These are the top movies i'm looking for to replace: The Alien Quadrilogy, The Matrix Movies, The Star Wars movies, all Star Trek movies, The Lord of the Rings set, The Harry Potter collection, The Jurrassic Park Movies, and the new War of the Worlds.

Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet, the four-hour version, came out to theaters in 1996. To this day, it still hasn't come out on DVD. I haven't seen this in nearly 10 years! Some of the obvious movies like Star Wars and LOTR are practically a given for HD discs, but if I heard that either format had an obscure title like this one, it would really make my day.

Somehow bigger and sharper CGI doesn't do it for me. It's great, but not the motivating factor. What impresses me the most in HD are landscapes, groups of people, crazy good costuming and artwork, and outstanding head shot/performances that would normally be muted in 480. No one title would sway me, but things like Seven Years in Tibet, 25th Hour, Gangs of New York, A Clockwork Orange, Dr. Zhivago, the Untouchables, etc come to mind.

Ryan's Daughter will be out on DVD this February in a special edition.

Another David Lean film, Passage to India (his last) has been playing on HD-Net movies this month. Looked very nice. This is a Columbia picture and we can expect to see it on Blu-Ray (along with The Bridge on the River Kwai, which is already promised for this summer.)

Of course, Lawrence of Arabia has to count as my number one choice for the HD format. But I don't expect it to rival the 70mm presentation.

Thatr's great news about Ryan's Daughter, rlsmith! I wish i still had my projector to best appreciate the sweeping cinematography of that film. It will be nice to hear the score in 5.1 also. Since it is new to DVD, it would be great if an HD transfer was also made at the same time. Speaking of David Lean, how does the HDNET HD presentation of Paths Of Glory look? Ghostbusters, my favorite film of all time.

Now, seeing that this is a Sony film, and that they just did a new high-def master last year, I'd say that it's a sure thing this will be on Blu-ray within the first year or so.

Okay, now that I think about it, one film isn't worth investing in a whole new format for...

One thing we have to consider, if we use DVD as any kind of precedent and reference point:

Does anyone here really have any illusions that you will once again see studios double dipping, AT LEAST, on a lot of these titles, the same way they did on DVD?

You'll get your barebones, first gen title, then a year or two later, you'll get the Director's Cut, 6 months after that or so, you might get the Ultimate Underground Uncensored Cut, and then maybe another year after that you might get the "Completely different version with comments from everyone and their realitives and acquaintances off the street" version.

You catching my drift? ;)

That sort of thing certainly cools my jets a bit.

I, like many others, have bought more than one copy of more movies than I care to admit.

I will not be doing that cycle again, so if anything, my adoption this next time around will probably be even more slow and gradual than my adoption of DVD was.

Actually, I'm more worried about layer change with HiDef than with DVD, since the amount of data should conceivably be much larger, requiring a much bigger buffer to make an invisible layer change.

That will be intolerable and unacceptable.

One of the seemingly ever growing list of things that will keep me from NOT being an early adopter, in general, is that I need to see and know that things like layer change have ceased to exist, because for next generation anything? They should not exist at all.

I'm sitting out the first year or more due to a dislike for downrezzing and a projector with no HDMI inputs. Meanwhile I probably won't replace the projector until I can get a good deal on one with 1080p/60 inputs and native display.

But if either format released the entire Buffy collection in HD it might come close to kick starting my shopping again.

Also, our sources in the know are telling us that the reason for the delay of Quentin Tarantino's long-awaited Kill Bill: Special Edition DVDs, is that the release rights to the Kill Bill films have left Miramax with the departure of the Brothers Weinstein. This applies to at least Tarantino's edited-together Whole Bloody Affair version, if not the theatrical versions (which as recently as CES were promoted by Buena Vista/Miramax for release on Blu-ray Disc format later in 2006 - click here and look at the fourth picture down). That would mean that any DVD release is going to be handled directly by The Weinstein Company, through their new DVD distribution partner, Genius Products (Derailed will be the first Weinstein film to be released by Genius on disc, on 3/21). No one get their panties in a bunch just yet.

We have ZERO idea of what the quality of either format will be (or can be) for both Audio and Video on consumer grade, pre-recorded discs and won't know until there are pro-grade reviews that pick these discs and players apart on the best equipment available.

I'm dubious about MPEG-2 on a 25 GB disc, for instance. And I'd be concerned they won't be using the 16 Megabits/sec or greater VBR range for VC-1 and MPEG-4 AVC HP in order to eliminate the possible nasty macroblocking and other anomolies of these low bitrate codecs (bare minimum bitrates for practically identical performance of a D-5 tape). They are quite new codecs too with few choices in authoring software available yet, and little time for these video-post companies to learn the tricks to great encoding for both.

Also, how will the bulk of the audio tracks be encoded? If they are mostly lossy DD and DTS as before I'd be pretty PO'd. They have GOT to be top quality, ultra-high resolution bit-for-bit lossless packed or uncompressed LPCM from the best masters for me to buy.

This time around I will be picky... very, very picky. I hope other people will be too. HD, any HD is not acceptable. It must be premium HD audio and video.

Blade Runner

The movie that led me to buy my first VCR. I saw the video sitting in the display case - in the then (1983) recently introduced "Beta Hi-Fi Stereo" format. I asked "which unit do I need to play this tape." The salesman pointed to the top of the line $1,500 Betamax. I said "give me that along with your best video monitor (didn't own a TV but had a nice stereo)."

Now, four Laserdisc and two dvd versions later, along with dozens of home theater equipment purchases, I've been impatiently waiting for the HD version.

I don't think the DTS logo will be in the blue bit, I think that's meant to be the plastic at the top of the case!

I have to echo a few others.....

The one movie would be........

Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet

The movie has been out 10 years and is still not on DVD - A great movie interpretation of the the play. It was shot with 70 MM and would/should look scary good.

It is a true shame that such a strong story and well done movie can't even get released on DVD while so many other lesser movies do.

Stunning visuals and a dynamite soundtrack that would really benefit from hi rez audio. Owned by Miramax/BVHE so it's a candidate. If you haven't watched this one with the volume cranked up you're missing a real treat.

if Sony put out a very high quality edition of Jean De Florette/Manon Of The Spring w/in the next year, i would condsider buying a Bd player at their inflated introductory prices.
odds of that however are about 999999999.9 to 1

closest things to realistic are Superman, Alien, James Bond,

when these are on the shelf it will be hard to resist any longer
