My girlfriend just got a pair of Phase Tech PC 9.1's for X-Mas and has a McIntosh MC2002 amp and both a Krell 300r receiver and Krell 150a amp (and yes I am a lucky man). Which would you use to power the Phase Techs?

Why don't you just try them all and see for yourself/herself if you think one is preferable over the other.

Mac fans are going to suggest the Mac, Krell fans are going to suggest the Krells...

I think i'm going to give my wife a pair of Mini Monitors for Valentine's day.

Which ever amp has more power :)

If I was using Krell and McIntosh electronics, I'd probably consider using something other than Phase Tech speakers. But that's just me.

It wasn't exactly a researched decision. Her parents auditioned the speakers and picked them out for her. The amps were her grandmothers, so everything just kind of came together as opposed to being carefully selected as a unit.

What amp would you use with the phase techs?

As far as which has more power, at 4 ohms they're both pushing 300 watts. So that's a wash...

I'd test the market to see which item fetches a higher price and sell it. Use the casholla to buy more stuff :)

ShagnWagon --- I would keep the Krell and Mac gear and buy better speakers. I won't bother to enumerate. Let's just say the choices are many. I'll be candid. Krell and Mac make some very nice gear, certainly at a level deserving speakers from a league that won't be extending invitations to Phase Tech anytime soon. There ... I said it ... please don't be mad ........... :-)

It was my understanding that the 9.1's were nice speakers...

I finally had the chance to try the Krell amp with the Phase Techs. My first impression was that the Krell sounded cleaner. But now I'm thinking it sounded a little colder. I also had to turn the volume up more with the Krell amp. So for now I'm going to stick with the McIntosh amp.

Anybody know if the amp section in the Krell 300r and Krell 150a are the same?

Whatever amp you prefer is the right amp for your speakers. I am a Krell guy myself, but I've never heard the Mc amps with my speakers. Both companies make great stuff.

As to other comments about buying new speakers - if you like the phase tech's keep them. But, if it were me, I would seriously consider something different. Especially since you seem to have some nice used amps you could sell. The PT's arent's in the same league as Krell/Mc.

Whatever you decide, enjoy it! And yes, you are a very very lucky man!

Until we see a picture of your girlfriend, we really cannot give a qualified answer. :D

A question to those dissing the PC9.1s, what have you compared them with?

Eric, You know by now that listening to stuff is not necessary ... :D

Here is a pic of the 9.1's ...

http://www.phasetech.com/images/products/PC-91-large.jpg

Here are the specs ...

Tweeter 1" user-adjustable soft dome w/ Unicell anti-diffraction treatment
Midrange 1.5" soft dome w/ Unicell anti-diffraction treatment
Woofer 3 x 6" RPF flat-piston
Dimensions 45-1/2" (H) x 8-1/4" (W) x 14" (D), Base: 9" (W) x 15" (D)
Grilles Geometric tapered black or white fabric
Frequency Response 32 Hz - 22 kHz ( 3dB)
Sensitivity 92 dB
Impedance 4 Ohms
Finishes Natural Cherry, Honey Oak, Black Ash
Ship Weight 84 lbs. each

They not only manufacture their own drivers, they also design them from the ground up. These speakers list for $2000 per pair. If nothing else, they sure look like an audition is warranted.

Eric:

I won't speak for others, but my comments were not intended to "diss" the PC9.1's. I was simply making the observation that Krell and Mac are very much high-end gear and comparable speakers would help show the full potential from such fine amplifiers.

Thanks for the reply Obi.

I am not attepmting to chastise anyone, but I'd like to point out that speakers vary greatly in the $/performance ratio and there may be lesser known brands which out perform the big names. Recommending a system to someone is further complicated by the fact that we all hear and perceive differently.

Phase Tech has been around for a long time and I have no doubt that they could produce a fine product at the 2k price point (I haven't heard them either). I agree with Craig, on paper these deserve an audition.

Keep in mind the OP did not ask how he should spend 15k on speakers. Anyway best wishes, I just don't want the OP to think a very nice gift should be perceived as junk.
