Surprised nobody mentioned that the new 600 series plasmas will have the two way cablecard. I would imagine the new Toshiba 66 series will also have CC2.

This has been the subject of speculation for a little while now. Most doubt the technology will be ready for the march/april release date - and my personal feeling is that the "cable card 2" statement is a typo. In the original press statement, panasonic said the 600 units will have a cable card^2 slot (2 in superscript). The superscripted 2 referred to a footnote below talking about cable cards and seeing your cable company for availability.

This sounds like the most logical explanation to me.

If they build a 65" 1080p PDP that includes a two-way CableCARD slot... maybe I'll buy one someday! :D

True, but if the set has the capability at least you have the option somewhere down the road. Also, the cable companies will be more enthusiastic knowing that they can still get their revenue without the STB's.

I would agree, the cable companies then would have a motivation to transition people and properly train the tech's to implement it as a potential revenue source is being fed. I don't think you can add a cable card on your own anyways so if they build it in it's likely it becomes a revenue stream for Cable Companies and seems the cost overhead may be less than STB's. :)

While progress has been made I believe it is going to be a while before there is wide-spread support for OCAP 2.0:
Cable Television Industry Voices Support for OCAP™ and Two-Way Digital Cable-Ready Product Deployments (http://www.cablelabs.com/news/pr/2006/06_pr_ocap_ces_010506.html)

I think we will see these go to self-install over time as we have seen with cable modems. It's not really a different process: plug in and type in some data specific to the TV so the headend can authorize the connection.
They were probably smart to insist on tech install given the low success rate of CableCard installs.

Two-Way CableCARD is a dream! Doubtful that there will be any significant support for it in the market. Cable Companies always want you to have a box, to control your experience and their additional advertising space. Downloadable security might have some promise. I think the answer to this problem is finding an elegant solution for connecting the cable box to the TV, and not trying to put the cable box in the TV.

Anythings possible. Here's the official panasonic announcement from their website.
http://www2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/prModelDetail?storeId=11301&catalogId=13251&itemId=95880&modelNo=Content01032006040018477&surfModel=Content01032006040018477
And here is the area I think is causing the confusion:
