Are there any BluRay 1080p demo files to d/l now to sample how the PQ will be?
I know that Microsoft has some files but that's compressed to WMVHD so it's not a true sampling of BluRay quality?
...and you would play them back with...

Since Blu-ray and HD-DVD are just HD videos encoded with mpeg-2 or vc-1 or H.264 you can get a taste of the quality at Microsoft's WMVHD showcase or Apple's HD trailer section on their site. They run like crap though.

I playback the 1080p clips w/full Dolby Digital Surround just fine.

For some reason I got audio sync problems the last time i played back a clip using CoreAVC with Zoom Player. This is with a 3ghz P4 too. I guess i'll try it again.
Of course I can't really try because I can't save any of the HD clips on Apple's sites. Rar.

I tried the Microsoft WMV 1080p, and is it just me or are these not breathtakingly stunning. (Don't get me wrong, they're excellent) but not a ton different than a DVD with a scalar.

Are you watching the wmv files on your computer monitor or sending them to your television.
What resolution will your monitor and or tv do?

The wmvhd clips are miles better than scaled dvd. Even the 720p trailers beat the hell out of dvd mostly because of the lack of mpeg2 noise. Too bad there's not more material.

When I see this kind of thing ... I start wondering whether the PQ will be different enough for majority of the people to make them want to upgrade ....
I think the formats have a hell of a lot of marketing ahead of them ...

Yes - I'm starting to agree. I've been watching 1080P WMHD & QuicktimeHD movie trailers on a 24" 1920x1200 Dell LCD monitor.
The trailers look very, very good - no mistake. But, I don't find them jaw-droppingly better than DVD.
Granted, this is only a 24" monitor, not a big TV but....
1. I'm only about 1.5 feet from the screen.
2. The general populace doesn't own 70" TVs or 100"+ projection screens.
I wonder if this will be analagous to DVD-A/SACD. They just don't seem to present enough of an improvement over Red Book CD for the average consumer to care.
the bitrate of the downloadable stuff is way, way lower than what you will see on discs for either format.
