I ordered a 34XS955 from Crutchfield which will be here next week (I am so excited!). I need to buy a DVD player for it and I was wondering if there was a clear pick for a DVD player for this TV? If not, what are some suggestions and what do I need to look for in a DVD player that will be best for this TV?

Thanks

I alot users like the Oppo Player, as well as the Panasonic S77 and S97, the new Sonys with HDMI output also seem to be pretty good players

Can't go wrong with them choices^^^

Although macroblocking could be a problem with lower quality trasnfers of DVD's.

In that case you may want a solid 480p component player like a Panasonic or sony or pioneer.

I have the Oppo DVD Player and I just love it. It has a much better processor than my tv does for handling film-based material. Check out the DVD Players (Standard Def) section of AVS Forum - there's a bunch os stuff there on the Oppo and all other kinds of players as well.
Make sure the DVD player is not a Toshiba. There are so many broken units out there and I am hearing the same story all the time. Maybe it's because the DVD players aren't made by Toshiba in the first place.
NO one mentioned Toshiba and your post is not applicable.

If you make a "claim", post a reference to back it up. No one can believe anything you say anymore.

One model, < $100, what do you expect? You can find that same review for any <$100 player.

Stop with your Orion obsession...

Kny3twalker's opinion is a good one. In the DVD player forum, the Panasonic S97 seems to get the most votes for an under $300 player, but all would be good choices.

Ok I am confused, so these are upscaling DVD players. Are you guys suggesting getting an upscaling DVD player for a 34XS955, or are these DVD players just really good and happen to upscale? The reason I ask is because isnt the XS955 good at upscaling? Or would the OPPO do a better job?

For the most part, upscaling dvd players have been kinda overhyped.

I bought the Oppo for my Sony set simply because of the deinterlacing/ 3:2 reverse pulldown, scaling going on in its circuitry. It's simply better than what Sony includes in its set - that's all. The upconversion really doesn't matter to me all that much.

Does the Sony set already have upscaling?
Somewhat, but not in the same way the upscaling dvd players are doing. The tv can take in 480i, apply it's own video processing and upscale to 960i, but not 720p or 1080i. On my Sony, if I set my dvd player to output 480p, then that's what the tv shows on the screen - no upscaling there.

But, as I said, upscaling for the sake of upscaling is pretty much over hyped.

I think it's more the latter. I didn't notice any real difference between the HDMI and the component connections. I have the 34XBR960 tube, but it is the same as the 34XS955 tube.

the xs and xbr do not upscale DVD content (when using cinemotion)

So for the Sony CRTs, the best setting for the OPPO would be to have it upscale to 1080i?

no cause the Oppo apprently has issues outputting interlaced resolutions but has a good scaler from 480i to 720p

720p is best for the oppo when i had it,i made a big review on it a while back if someone can dig it up it's very helpfull and in depth for the OPPO player.
