In addition to those, if you can find any Panasonic 30 inchers, those are quite solid and comparable as well.

Yup, Panasonics are very comparable to sony and at cheaper prices too!

Keep in mind the panasonics don't support 720p, Athough not that big of a deal sense your video source should handle it. I thought the panasonic 30 incher had a great picture but it had terrible red push, When i was considering the set i did reasearch trying to find out if there was a fix in the service menu for the red push but couldn't find one. There may be one but i didn't see it. I'd go for the Sony KV-30HS420 if money is an issue or the XS if your willing to spend more.

I can get a 30xs955 used (purchased Jan 2005) with 4 year warranty for $635. I'm just wondering if it will be big enough. I know the picture kicks arse. Also concerned that 4:3 material is only 24"'s.. I'd prefer a bigger 4:3 set.. Any places selling the 36" model for around $1000?

I thought the same thing when i bought my 30" sony, I have a 50" hitachi sd rptv and thought i'd never be able to go back to a smaller tv but when i got the 30" sony i actually liked it better cause i no longer half to move my eyes all over the screen when watching something. I asume you mean a fullscreen 36" cause ive never heard of a 36" widescreen CRT HDTV, I wouldn't bother with a 4:3 set with everything going widescreen, Fullscreen might be bigger but your going to have huge black bars for your DVD's and HDTV, Just a bad move to make at this point in time.

I'm pretty happy with my Phillips 30PW8420, which I purchased almost a month on sale from CC for like $579 brand new. Had pretty good picture compared to others in store, was right next to the Sony 30inch. For the price I'm happy with the purchase.

My Philips 30PW8420 is a good performer too. Got it for an even lower price through Philips Outlet. Got to watch my pennies, what with supporting missionaries and paying for my son's various sports fees. Still, the lower price Philips set gives, to my eye, at 1080i as good a picture as there is on 30" CRTs. I'm very happy with it.
I was pleased with the picture out of the box, after a few on-screen adjustments, but I calibrated the picture last night with Avia. Now I see how oversaturated some of the colors were. Avia has produced much more consistent and realistic flesh tones. That took care of the adjustments my set needed, without going into the service menu.
I have to admit, even if the sony is a bit more for the money... I'll have a very difficult time giving Sony Corp my $... Especially after the DRM fiasco

I hate Sony too... because Sony hates their customers... But, I had to buy the TV... I did it reluctantly, but, I wanted the best.

Yes, Because its a good product, Im not a fan of sony either, Most of there stuff outside of tv's isnt all that great and i'd never buy it but they make the best tv's so why not buy from them?

I also agree outside of TVs Sony has nothing
they are not really junk, like some bands but there is always something better usually for the same price
I think their DVD players are pretty good too though
Playstation 2 and 3 are pretty nice components how about blue ray tech. ?

I don't have it yet ( it arrives on Monday ) but I bought the SONY KD30XS955 - the set that everyone here seems to rave about at JR site ( alternatively Amazon will refer you there ) for $699.00 plus around $172 freight charge / no tax. A great bargain considering I was 99% going to buy the Sony HS whatever 30' set for around $760 at Best Buy.
I was also lucky enough to buy an Xbox 360 2 days ago ( thats a story in itself - first finding it in stock and then getting the salesman to sell it to me and then watching him play his game on another persepective buyer. You'd think it was made out of gold the way they handle those things. ).
