View Full Version : Easiest way replaytv to DVD
I know there are many ways to get tv shows from ReplayTV to a PC and then burn to DVD. We are going on vacation and my daughter wants to put several TV shows on a DVD for our trip. I already have DVArchive and Nero. If I do not have to edit the TV shows at all is there anything I have to do to the files that are downloaded via DVArchive to the windows PC before burning to DVD. The shows are recorded in low or medium quality only. Will there be a problem with the audio and video being out of sync or other problems?? Also, is there anything special needed to put multiple shows on 1 DVD.
I have read about more complicated ways( with editing, etc) to obtain the above, but I just need the shows on DVD.
Thanks since I have only a short time,
Al

Since there's only like two dozen or so existing threads on this topic, why not try using the search function instead of having to wait around for everyone to re-post what we've all said multiple times before.

For quick and dirty, find the mpg's on the hard drive, dump them into whatever DVD program you have (movie factory, ect), and play them on your DVD player. You might be suprised. If you download DVD shrink and shrink the DVD before you put it on the DVD (like only 99%) it might 'fix' some of the problems.

Buy a somewhat cheap DVD Recorder
Hook it up to your video outputs on the ReplayTV
Insert recordable DVD in the drive
Hit Record on the DVD Recorder
Hit Play on your ReplayTV
Finalize it (if necessary)
That's what I do.

Without knowing exactly what you're going to be playing the DVD's on, it's impossible to give you the best solution.
Just take a laptop loaded up with recorded shows with you on your trip and be done with it. If you want to display on a bigger TV then take S-video and stereo cable with you and hook up laptop to the TV. No need for DVDs. As a plus that way you can then auto-skip commercials too which you can't do with DVDs.

I don't even bother making DVD movie - I just burn the mpg files.
I just do a RTVEDIT (with no actual edits) then RTVCONVERT, then I load the MPG into TMPGDVD author, make any edits as needed and burn.
TMPGDVD Author does not reencode the mpg.

I thought the DVP-642's wouldn't play raw RTV files. Don't you have to run them through RTVEDIT & then RTVCONVERT to strip out the RTV-specific-timing information first?

If you've got to have DVDs, the easiest way is to hook a Replay up to a DVD recorder and play the show to the recorder. For greatest compatibility, record to DVD-R discs.
If you need to retain the best PQ possible, it takes just a little more effort. DVA the show(s) to your PC, run them through RTV Tools (there's a short learning curve for using RTVedit and RTVconvert), and author and burn the DVDs with the program(s) of your choice (I like TMPGEnc DVD Author, but MovieFactory and a few other programs that are packaged with DVD+/-RW drives might be a little easier to use). If you're in a hurry and don't want to spend much time, don't get started down this path.
Success in whatever you decide.

Here is a technique that I have found works well:
1) Download show(s) using DVArchive
2) Use VideoReDo to remove commercials and save the edited shows as demuxed audio and video streams. Be sure you have enabled VideoReDo 's nifty feature of automatically saving cut points as a chapter list file.
3) Use DVD Lab to make a basic menu and add your shows. DVD Lab requires demuxed files, but you already have those from VideoReDo.
4) Use DVD Lab's import chapter list feature to import the chapter list for each show that was saved by VideoReDo. This conveniently allows you to have chapters for the beginning of each new segment of the show.
5) Compile the DVD and burn using DVD Lab's built-in burning feature.
Though it may not work on all DVD players, I have found that I can mix and match standard and medium quality shows on a single DVDR using the above method. And, of course, there is no lengthy reencoding this way. Works very well and is fast.
