I have an insignia HDTV (27") it's a pretty good set and I only have 1 small complaint on it. I have a zenith DVD player (the upconvert one) and I'm getting a good amount fo "microblocking" (i.e. pixelization) perticularly on VERY dark scenes. first question, does anyone have this TV with an upconvert DVD player?
(keep in mind, this TV doesn't have HDMI or DVI inputs, only component, so I need a upconvert DVD player that will work over component)

thanks!

you will not find any legal DVD players that upconvert over component

you can use a PC and there is software to disable CSS on DVDs

and are you sure the player is the problem and not the TV?

I currently have a zenith DVB318 that DOES do an upconvert over component.... are you telling me this is illegal? I understand the reasons for DVI and namely HDMI (for copy protection purposes) but some other players must be able to upconvert over component video besides the zenith. no?

also, can anyone comment on what is a better resolution, 720p vs 1080i? I've heard arguments that 720 P is actually a better resolution due to it's progressive scanning.... can anyone shed some light on this or at least point me in the right direction?

all CRTs display 1080i for HD sources if they are HD ready or a HDTV

there maybe some but they will run like crazy from anyone stating they are from the MPAA

It was only a matter of time until a company released a fully "unlocked" player that upconverted DVDs to 1080p. Just think of the marketing angles: "Why wait for high definition DVD when you can have it now!" or "Who needs Blu-ray Disc when you can get 1080p from your home movie collection!" What has people so excited about the NeuNeo player (pronounced "New-Neo") is the fact that it outputs 480p/720p/1080i/1080p from its component and HDMI outputs (latest firmware required). How do they do it? Well, I assume they run very quickly from anyone representing the MPAA since this violates the DVD spec. In any case, feel free to get them while they're hot - if 1080p output over component is something you've secretly asked Santa for this year and you don't mind some odd quirks and questionable video performance.

this player is available, I guess??

its the only player I know of that can upscale copy protected DVDs over component anymore

there are suppose to hacks/firewire upgrades/updates for some other players
but I could not tell you off the top of my head

you say all CRT direct views display 1080i, but they CAN display below I assume (480p 720p) which resolution is better 720P or 1080i?

This thread lists the 4 players that currently do upconverting over component:
