I was just wondering if burn in can happen with direct view CRTs, Im just kinda worried since with 4:3 programming the black bars on the sides, could that cause burn in?

it's damn near impossible to burn in a direct view tube

I agree, but who knows after about 5 years of viewing as phosphorous may not be as bright in the 4:3 viewing area.

I accidentally left my TV on for over 12 hours once. It's a Zenith C27V22, and when it's not receiving a signal, it displays a bright white clock and source info in the upper right corner. When I walked into the house, I noticed I had left it on. I quickly turned it off and expected to still see the clock still in the corner, but I couldn't see anything. It was just fine.
So, I'd say it's just about impossible.

Well if you have it properly calibrated and contrast in the middle like mine, it's close to impossible to cause burn-in.
For videogames that are in 4:3 i prefur using that mode since i don't like stretching the image since it ruins PQ and on some 4:3 games i play a lot of hours and have been doing this for the past 2 years now no problems what so ever with burn-in on my SONY 34" 34HS420.

We get this at least once a month.
People: You have to go to absurd, deliberate, and literaly INSANE degrees of abuse to get burn-in on any even REMOTELY modern Direct View CRT tube!

On my 4 year old JVC 27in TV, I always left the clock on in the corner and it eventually burned in.

yes it can happen but its not the black that burns but the whites , black areas are where the beam is turned off.

thats what would cause burn in, the phosphor dots in the black bars not wearing as evenly as the middle of the TV
I would not worry though, if you watch any 16:9 content, there will be wear on those phosphor dots near on the sides

Well, yes, you would eventually wear the center out more than the sides. But even then, I think it would be very hard to notice a difference.

According to Audioholics, CRTs don't burnin except for very long term displaying of fixed images (unusual). Check the comparison chart at the link below.
