On my xbr960 when I watch DVD's or xbox, it never detects 16:9 and I have to manually choose full mode on the tv. On HDTV, it auto-detect it and changes to full mode. Anyone know why?

full mode is the default for HDTV, do you by chance have the default for 480i content set to normal?

I set 4:3 mode to normal on the tv

that maybe causing the problem
have you tried turning off the default on 4:3 content
Are you expecting 16:9 DVD to fill screen on widescreen TV??? Not sure it works that way. But I think KNY and Q can best advise.

DVDs will fill the screen but only if 1.85:1 aspect ratio
all DVDs which have a wider aspect ratio will have bars on the top and bottom
a common wider aspect ratio is 2.35:1, used for most action movies

No im saying that they are in 4:3 screen mode until I manually change it to full mode. I turned 4:3 default mode off and it made no diff.

is your DVD player setup correctly?

Both dvd player and xbox are setup for widescreen.
So when you pop in a dvd and switch to Video 6 or whatever, you dont have to hit the screen mode button on your remote?

That's what's supposed to happen, but only on component or dvi/hdmi inputs. I don't think the anamorphic flag is carried on svideo or composite, I may be wrong.
When you manually select Full or Normal when watching a DVD, which mode makes the video look correct? IE, nothing looks fat/stretched horizontally or skinny/stretched vertically?

Im using component cables with my dvd player and xbox. Its in normal mode which makes the movie 4:3 and I switch it to full mode to get the correct ratio.

According to the operating manual, page 58, "To retain the current Screen Mode setting as channels and inputs are changed, set 4:3 Default to Off. It then directs you to Page 99 for instructions for using the Screen Menu. Hope this helps.

well I will say this I just connected and setup my DVD player with my Sony LCD and it detected it
it started in 4:3 normal and made the switch to full
I am almost positive, I never touched the screen mode on the LCD
this is over component, also I see my Sony CRT do this with DVDs all the time over DVI to HDMI
although the screen mode does not change cause its already 1080i widescreen

Actually 1:85:1 won't fill the screen either. It's a bit shorter in height than the 16:9 aspect.
I find many movies are 2:35:1 which is VERY short vertically comparitively to it's width.

So, in normal mode, video content is 4:3 and stretched vertically?
And, in Full mode, video content looks normal?
And, the tv doesn't switch to Full automatically?
If yes to all questions, this validates that your DVD player is sending anamorphic video but your tv is not auto sensing it.
BTW, not all "enhanced for 16:9/widescreen tvs"/anamorphic DVDs are completely anamorphic. Many have non-anamorphic menus and extras.
Also, DVDs of tv series, etc. are usually if not always 4:3 DVDs. I don't know if they can be made anamorphic or not. I don't own any.
Just a thought: ****Is your DVD player an upconverting player? If yes, then that's a completely different issue. :o

^^^ Yes.
I found out its when I set my dvd player or xbox to progressive scan. With progressive on, the info bar shows 480p, 4:3. When I turn progressive off, it shows 480i, 16:9. Why would it do that?

fills my screen with ~5% overscan, have not had a chance to view too many DVDs on the LCD yet
but I figure I will probably get small bars, maybe not
I understand its shorter but overscan makes it fill the entire viewable area
I know 16:9 is 1.7(repeating):1
