I just recieved my sony 30xs955 and in order to get it up the stairs the delivery guy and I had to put it vertically on the dollie. On the box it says not to trasport it that way but it was only like that for a few minutes untill we got it up to my apartment. Do you all think this is okay or could it possibly have damaged it?

I havent hooked it up yet or even taken it out of the box so i dont have any reason to believe that it did damage it but I just thought Id get some opinions on the matter.

P.S. That thing is flippin heavy :)

The guy was an idiot. Two people should have delivered it and CARRIED it right. I've owned a #1 ranked moving company for years and if I ever saw one of my guys do that....I'd send him to the unemployment line. You need to nip problems like that in the bud. Thats why I've had no damage in 6 years...and I've moved 500 HDTV's.

Hope it's all good. I'm sure it's fine. It's just that stupid things like that really piss me off.

You are just the man I want to talk to!

I'm about to order a DLP with shipping dimensions of 64 x 26 (x 44 h). This is according to CNET, which is the only place I could find them. Even the manufacturer had nothing (I could find) about shipping size.

I live in a flat in San Francisco with an iron gate in front of three doors, of which mine is on the left. I haven't cut out a template and tried the maneuvering, but I'm pretty sure that the only way to get the unit into my flat's entrance will involve tilting it. Once it's inside, there's a stairway and then a narrow hall leading to a narrow door to my living room. But I figure once the thing is inside, it can be removed from its shipping box and just barely schlepped to its final destination.

It is possible that the unit could be deboxed in the street (I live right at a bus stop), but I would REALLY prefer not to do that.

In your experience, is this going to be as big a nightmare as I fear it might be? I'm almost ready to just forget the whole thing because of the potential delivery mess -- though I really want a great big TV.

Thanks for any info.

you definitely need for any CRT over 27"

Hey, all moves are nightmares because none are fun and they all are stressful and brutal. :D

My first suggestion is...you paid good $ for the TV and it's worth a few hundie more to hire someone who is experienced and insured. I use to work at Granny's Movers in SF back in the 90's(I lived on Richmond in a place similar to yours) and I would call them. We used to hoist up pianos via pully throughout SF and at least then, always did a crack job.

As far as deboxing...YES! I never carry a TV in the box...or use a dolly...or anything else. You'll find no better control than with your own hands and strength. The most sure way is to remove from box, wrap in pad or plastic wrap, and find 3 more buddies to help with the actual backbreaking. In place of a pad, you can use a thick blanket or quilt. I prefer to first place the pad on the TV and THEN plastic wrap the entire unit.

Could you post a pic of the pathway from front gate to final resting place? Wish I was living back there still....I'd help ya for a bruski. :)

I don't have a camera. Really. The entry is the typical SF flat deal -- An iron security grill with an iron gate in the middle that only opens 90 degrees. Three doors recessed about three feet back from the grill. Of course, my door is the one on the left, not in the middle. So, there is a really serious displacement of the access path off to one side. Plus the iron gate opening to the right makes access to the left door even harder.

I plan to pay the big bucks for the "white glove" delivery service from the online retailer. (I know, I know, everybody says buy from a local store, but I simply cannot afford the enormous dollar difference, even after the delivery charges, for a local store. I'd prefer it if I could afford it.)

Since the white glove service includes deboxing and removal of all the packing stuff, I guess it doesn't really matter if I have to ask them to debox it outside. And there is a garage immediately adjacent to the front gate anyway, so the deboxing could be done inside the garage with the "naked" TV being schlepped only four feet on the sidewalk.

I think the only thing I can do to reassure myself is to cut out (from old humongous boxes I have) a couple of cardboard templates to see what is possible without having to tilt the TV on its end. I can do a template for the boxed and unboxed width and depth dimensions and see what's what with each. Maybe it'll work out after all. I really want that big TV!

I'd buy you the beer anyway, but I think I have to pay the bucks for the delivery service and their insurance rather than face the consequences of me or a friend bouncing a $2500 TV down the stairs.

Thanks for your help!
