Recently bought a panasonic 42phd8uk and had it installed last Friday, everything is going good so far except one little problem. The monitor is hooked up to a comcast digital cable box via a monster cable DVI to HDMI adaptor and then a HDMI cable to the TV (I installed the optional TY-FB7HM HDMI blade). My issue is whenever I am viewing HD channels the picture seems to be stuck in "full mode" and it will not allow me to adjust to the zoom, just, or normal settings. But when viewing normal digital channels or DVD's it will allow me to adjust to those modes. Has anybody else encountered this or have any idea whats going on? I already had the comcast cable guys come by and he was no help. Thanks

The panel does not allow for this option when watching an HDTV source. You can use zoom to adjust to full screen, but it is not an optimal solution. Alternatively, you can use the Comcast remote to take advantage of its "just" mode when watching HD material.

JUST and ZOOM and NORMAL are only available with the signal is SD (480i or 480p). You can see what kind of signal the display is getting by bringing up the information window. Most brands are like this, but a few like Pioneer or Hitachi have a stretch mode or two available for HD signals. Panasonic has unwisely chosen not to offer this to it's customers, but the new PX60/600U models will have a new stretch mode called HD-Fill which presumably is like JUST mode but works on HD signals so it looks like they've seen the err of their ways. I presume the future 9UK models will also have this HD-Fill thing.

Also, on my Panny, i've found that setting my cable box to output only 480i and 1080i give the best SD and HD performance (i've disabled 480p and 720p). Oddly, the 720p channels look better when outputted at 1080i where the image is noticeably sharper. You might try setting your cable box the same way.

My 60" SONY rear projection HDTV has a button to zoom HDTV pictures. Yes it will fill the screen better for wide screen movies (>1.78 to 1) but a noticeble drop in PQ and clipping of both sides of the picture. Non HD content on HD channels are of such poor quality you will not want to magnify the flaw. In short, its a mode that I will never use!
