Xbox 360 or stand-alone DVD player for KDS-R60XBR1?

While the 360 would offer you good performance I find it much too loud and would hear it easily during quiet passages. It's also gives off quite a lot of heat. I'd recommend a standalone like the Oppo or s97.

What's the difference between the Sony S97 and the S90?

The 360 doesn't upconvert, no HDMI and the picture isn't so hot either.

Upconverting doesn't seem like that big of a deal with the TV he has, the scaler in the XBR should be better then most players correct?

HDMI is also up in the air.

And PQ is from experience or other second hand info you have read?

The PQ on the 360 is exceptionally soft and muddy, in my experience, both on a Sony Ruby projector and JVC LCOS set... As others have mentioned, the 360 is also really loud.... The scaler in the set is pretty good, but decent upconverting players are cheap enough now, that it might be worth it... On my JVC LCOS, I use the Oppo and it looks amazing for a $200 dvd player.

Thanks! I just got done reading the long stickied thread on scalers and have a better understanding but not sure how much the technology has progressed in the 6-8 months that have elapsed in the time of that posting.

Good to know though since I just ordered the same TV and am looking for a DVD player to replace my older Sony model.

- I’ve posted this in different threads. I’ve found the SXRD’s scaler to be good, but have found that the most upscaling DVD players do a better job. I currently use a Panasonic S97.
