My ReplayTV died last night, I think the hard drive is hosed. Basically it froze up while watching a recorded show, I did a soft reboot and the "Welcome to ReplayTV screen" never appeared again. I rebooted about ten times and even unplugged all cables from the unit and pulled the power cord, same deal.

I was thinking of trying to reimage this drive but i'm figuring if it's hosed why bother but I was going to try anyway.

I'm at the point that I might just buy a preimaged drive and pop it in.

I'll ask my question either way. When I try to run the RTVPatch_2.5.3.exe in Windows Xp Pro under an account with Administrator privileges I get a black command prompt box that opens then closes. How do i run the .exe so I get the user interface?

Sounds like a bum download. RTVPatch is a Windows program (provided you're trying to run the Windows version), so you shouldn't get a black command prompt box when you run it.

The 2.5.3 and 2.4 versions are both available at: www.replaytvupgrade.com (http:/www.replaytvupgrade.com) under
Re-imaging with RTVPatch (http://www.replaytvupgrade.com/#reimaging)

If there is a difference between the behavior of what should be the same executable from two different sources, then I would strongly recommend both antivirus and antispyware scans.

It almost sounds like he's downloaded a self-extracting archive and is trying to run that thinking it's the actual program.

I downloaded it from

sourceforge

RTVPatch 2.5 for Windows [Notes] (2005-03-28 19:26)

It's only 12.6kb?

I downloaded the zipped version from replaytvupgrade, that one works.

What's with the version on sourceforge?

The board won't let me post the full link to it due to spam regulations.

When I double click on it I get a command prompt for a second and it closes.

I noticed even though it says for Windows it also says W2K-RTVPatch the line above it.

Edit: I found the problem with the sourceforge file I was right clicking "save target as" on the download link thinking it was a direct link to the file. When I just clicked on it I got the downloads select a server mirror page. So basically I was downloading a .htm file with an .exe on it which is why it was only 12.6kb and why it opened the cmd prompt and did nothing. I changed the extension to .htm and I got the download page opening up.

I already have another imaged drive being shipped to me but I want to try this just to see if it works.

Thanks guys.

If you're using Internet Explorer, you have to right-click files you want to download and "Save target as..." or IE will claim that the site is unavailable or not found.

Actually i'm using Firefox and right clicked "save link as". My mistake.

One big question before I do this, XP will install the driver for the Maxtor when I install it and might want to restart, just let Windows install the driver and let it restart right? When I tried this morning disk management saw the drive as 279gb, it's a 300 gig drive. Also do I have to mark the partition as active under disk management or leave it alone?

Do NOT let XP do anything to the drive. The only program that should write to the drive is RTVPatch.

XP does not display a decimal byte count.
To the drive manufacturer 1000 bytes is a kilobyte.
To XP 1024 bytes is a kilobyte.
Those numbers agree. i.e. Microsoft 279GB = Maxtor 300gb

Well, I managed to resurrect this drive. My 5000 series is up and running again, booted right up after I imaged it, I had to go through the setup again and update the features which I knew I would have to. Got done creating my channels and keyword searches so it's ready for duty. I fully expect this drive to crap out again. I suspect this drive has bad sectors and the show I was watching last night was recorded on one, plus it has froze a few times in the past few months but a reboot always fixed it. I didn't run the Maxtor utility because I was lazy tonight but I have the other imaged 300gig drive on it's way so now I have a backup.

Thanks for the help guys.
