I have a Pioneer PDP-505PG 50" plasma TV. I plan on buying a Denon 3806 and use HDMI upscaling to watch DVD's. According to the technical data on the TV:

Input Signal Correlation Table
************************

1920*1080i @ 50Hz
720*576p @ 50Hz
1280*720p @ 50Hz
720(1440)*576i @ 50Hz
1920*1080i @ 59.94/60Hz
720*480p @ 59.94/60Hz
1280*720p @ 59.94/60Hz
720(1440)*480i @ 59.94/60Hz

Now I dont know whether these are the resolutions supprted by my TV or this info is just there generally. There is no other data about HDMI anywhere else on the technical manual.

I would like to know whether purchasing a Denon 3806 is actually going to be a wise decision, and if it will make any significant impact on my TV display and most importantly, if my plasma is compatible with the 3806.

The receiver would work fine with the TV, I'm not sure why you think it might not. the Denon uses HDMI 1.1, you may want to check to see what your TV has.

I'm not sure what you're referring to when you say HDMI upscaling. The 3806 will convert analog to HDMI but doesn't scale the video higher than the native format (although I could be wrong).

your plasma is already going to upscale (or downscale) any image it gets to display at native rate (it has to as that's the way your display works). so the question is if the denon's scaling (and deinterlacing) electronics are better than your pio. you can't really answer that without trying and seeing for yourself.

an outboard scaler does the same thing (and I guarantee does it better than either, and all you would want for that would be a good 480i clean transport medium (like a SDI modded player). you would want to check that your panel can accept NT over one of it's inputs however before going this route.

HTPC can also preform this function rather well (deinterlace and scaling to native panel resolution over whatever connection type you want/need) if you want to go that route.

Joe M hit it right on the spot. The Denon 3806 does not "upscale" resolution. It will upconvert an analog signal via HDMI. You would need to look at the Denon 2807 or 4306 for "upscaling".

I use the Denon 2910 Upconversion player via HDMI and I set it at 720p.

I notice a SLIGHT difference when compared to Component/480p.
Acually sending my Pioneer a 480i (interlaced) signal gave a BETTER picture then 480p (progressive).

The 720p HDMI is better then both. BUT, as I said, just slightly better...a little sharper, a little more detailed. Probably the best I will get out of current DVD's.

It is my understanding that the Denon receivers have a problem with HDMI switching, and are revising them to a Series II version to correct this. Be sure you have the latest equipment when you go to buy it...they aren't released yet as far as I know, and there's no mention of it from Denon.
