I just noticed that the Sony DVP-NS75H player dropped from about $149.99 maybe three weeks ago to $114.99 on circuitcity.com. Also, I was at Walmart today and noticed their Cyberhome upconverting player was a mere $49.99! They were out of stock, though. Only a few weeks ago it was about $79 or so. I still haven't tried an upconverting player, but I've been playing with the idea. I figure I won't be buying into Blu-Ray or HD-DVD for another 18 months or so minimum, depending on how quickly the situation sorts itself out. But it looks like the release of HD-DVD has something to do with these dropping prices, and getting one is looking more appealing.
I imagine the Cyberhome one is crap but DAMN it's cheap. If I can find one in stock it's tempting just to pick one up and play with it. At the same time, I'd rather just get one I plan to use as my primary DVD player Is the Sony model recommended at that price? From the reviews, I've seen comments that it shrinks the screen, so a 1.78 to 1 picture will have black bars. That would be bothersome to me, and I noticed when I connected the Comcast 6412 III box with HDMI (using and HDMI/DVI cable to the TV's DVI input) there was a similar effect.
