View Full Version : Someone catch me up...
Its been forever since I have been on this forum (like 2 years) until a few days ago. Anyways, I went to ReplayTV's website to see if they make an HDTV recorder as I am about to get a new plasma and would love to record HD content since I travel so much. To my surprise there was no "current model" lineup, just something about a PC based ReplayTV beta. What happened? Did ReplayTV go under? Is there currently an HD solution available or do I need to come up with some home made solution?Does anyone make a HDTV DVR yet? I just caught wind of WiRNS and that is my next project. Sorry for the questions, ive just been out of the loop.
thanks

Thanks for the link. So no dice on an HDTV solution for now then?

It's likely the PC DVR software will be able to handle HDTV cards, but nothing concrete is know yet.
No hardware HDTV DVR from them is likely any time soon.

Hauppage does not appear to have an HD video capture card at the moment. Once they do, I have to assume that the ReplayTV PC software will be able to support it. But for now it appears to be SD only.
Thanks for the link. So no dice on an HDTV solution for now then?
Tivo Series 3 slated for release later this year has the best promise of an upcoming solution short term - High Definition, dual tuner with CableCard & OTA ATSC support with ethernet & expandable storage via SATA. Visit Tivo forums for more details. Aside from that most cable & satellite companies are offering their own HD PVR solutions so it's not like there is no solution right now.

Sorry for the questions, ive just been out of the loop.
No offense, djseto, but you're asking questions that you could easily look up yourself in the various AVS Forums or Google. You've been out of it for a lot longer than two years. PC HDTV cards have been available for many years. Hauppauge's dates back to at least 2001 and is no longer in production. Many other manufacturers have PC ATSC and QAM tuner cards. Various HDTV DVRs have come and gone--Sony and Toshiba come to mind right off. If you have some particular 2004 Toshiba HDTVs, you can still get a Toshiba HDTV DVR from TigerDirect, cheap. Cable and satellite HDTV DVRs have been available for at least a year. Numerous PC solutions support HDTV--Beyond TV, SageTV, Windows Media Center Edition 2005, the various PC HDTV tuner manufacturers' DVR software, etc. As for Hauppauge and the ReplayTV PC software, as far as I'm concerned, they've missed the market. Consumers will expect CableCARD support, but CableLabs licensing means that it will not be possible for consumers to buy upgrade cards that support CableCARD (although Hauppauge could continue to be an OEM supplier). Shortly after the ReplayTV PC software is actually available for purchase (apparently only as a bundle with Hauppauge hardware), it's likely that Windows Vista Media Center Edition computers will be available with CableCARD support. Windows Media Center computers already account for the majority of home PC sales, and very few of those users/purchasers will have any incentive to try alternative software. The ReplayTV PC software is the only one that currently restricts itself to a particular manufacturer's cards.
thanks for the answer. I have used the search function and looked around, but this board is notorious for threads that are insanely long. I was trying to read through a thread in the PlasmaTV subforum and it had over 1000 replies. I have free time, but not that much. I appreciate you answer and got way more info than I was looking for. I guess Ill just deal with non HD DVR stuff for now...
try narrowing the search to the replaytv forums.

duh. I meant that I was reading threads in the Plasma TV section regarding plasmas and as I searched for my answers, I constantly came across a lot of large threads. The most popular questions have the most replies, but of the large number of replies, only a few are what one is looking for. Its a catch 22, you want to search before you post, but the most popular questions are in the longest threads.
