I'm new to the world of plasma displays. I just purchased the Panasonic TH42PX60U at Circuit City yesterday.

Their extended warranties are priced at $460 for three years and $720 for five years (inclusive of the 1 year Panasonic Warranty).

I realize personal levels of risk acceptance come into play, but I'm very interested in what others are doing. Has anyone utilized the Circuit City repair process and what was that like? Are Panasonic plasmas generally reliable enough after the first year that the warranty would be a waste of money?

Thanks for any comments/feedback?

Suppose there was no such thing as an extended warranty. You went to CC and saw two gorgeous TV's. One cost $2,250 (purely hypothetical) with a one year warranty, and the other cost $2,970 with a five year warranty. Which do you think folks would buy? I think virtually everybody in the world would buy the less expensive TV, which is why manufacturers price them the way they do. What does this say about extended warranties? If they make sense, why don't the manufacturers get in on the (very profitable) action?

Something many people here aren't aware of is that VISA cardholders that have cards that double the manufacturers warranty also have the ability to get 3 or 5 year extended warranties directly from VISA. If you go to their website (VISA.COM) and look under the warranty page they show the prices. They're half of what most others go for.

While I agree with most people here about extended warranties (never bought one before this) I also understand even Consumer Reports, which is notoriously anti-extended warranty, even says to consider them for Plasmas and LCD's (due to the fact it's newer technology) IF the price is right (no more than 15-20% of unit's price)

And Actually almost all manufacturers DO offer extended warranties of their own.

This is true, Panasonic sent me information about their extended warranty after I registered my plasma on their website.

We bought a 42PX60U at Best Buy and they are offering a 4-year warranty for $299, much better than Panasonic's price.
But a VISA extender would only cost me $166 for 3 years and $268 for 5 years based on the price I paid.
This brings me to another question since the manuf warranty does not cover surges or lightning strikes. Is it necessary to run the cable through a surge protector? If so, who makes a good one?
Tnx,

I purchased my Panny online; does anyone have recommendations for extended warranties that can be purchased at a reasonable cost (such as the Best Buy offer)

I wouldn't believe anything Panasonic or Best Buy says, or tells you, in writing or not. Believe me, I have been through this. Bought a new Panasonic TH-42PD50U in 12/05, picture went out, no help from BB since was under mfg. warranty and had to do without my set for 61 days before it was repaired. Everyone from the first CSR up to the regional manager has flat out lied to me. Take this for what it's worth. Buyer beware with these two.

just wanted a few more opinions on this.

i'm buying a panasonic TH42PX60U this week, and have been offered a 4 year ext. warranty for $292 from Future Shop (basically the same thing as a Best Buy)

i'm still unsure of what to do on this and would love to hear from some more panny owners

Search this forum for tapeworks texas. They offer Mack warranties for a much cheaper price.

the Mack warranty offer does seem attractive, but i'll have to make sure it applies to Canadian consumers as well
