Plasma vs. LCD resolutions

I've noticed that most plasmas are 1024x768 XGA, while most LCDs are 13--x768. Why is this?

I think almost all (if not all) 42" plasmas are 1024x768 due to the physical limit of having so many pixels in the available space. They achieve 16:9 aspect ratio with rectangular (as opposed to square) pixels.

This is not the case for the larger plasmas, which support the full required resolution with square pixels.
