I can't imagine this is the first time someone's asked for help about this, but I DID do a forum search and didn't come up with any threads on the subject (so I apologize in advance if this topic is covered, but I wasn't able to find any info so I'm posting this).

I'm trying to use Adobe Premiere 2.0 to edit the videos downloaded from my ReplayTV 5040.

Unfortunately Premiere can't handle the mpeg2 files, I keep getting the "Unsupported File" error. Google didn't produce much help either. A friend mentioned that Adobe stopped supporting mpeg2 import after around version 6.3 or 6.5 of Premiere.

Now, I'm well aware that Womble makes a great product (MPEG Video Wizard) and that there's plenty of other choices for editors...But Premiere, IMO, is really the de-facto app for Video and if anyone can point me in the direction of perhaps some kind of hack or plug-in or ??? I'd very much appreciate it.

...I also tried renaming the files to .avi (from .mpg) and that actually DOES work, EXCEPT not in a reliable way (frames skip and audio is way out of sync).

Thank you for any help or guidance!

RTV MPEG's aren't 100% compliant. Adobe is probably choking on the extra RTV specific timing data. Run the mpeg through RTVTOOLS v4 to make a compliant MPEG-2 stream.

Once the stream is actually compliant, you shouldn't have any problems.

I've had good luck converting Replay files using ffmpgx as well. That is if you are a Mac user. I've been playing with MPEG Streamclip lately, and I think it would probably do a good job to convert the file into something Premier can handle.
