View Full Version : My plasma has problems displaying motion. Do all plasma do this?

I recently purchased a Panny 4260u and really like the picture. However I am having problems with motion. Whenever I play a FPS game on my xbox360 and move the camera very fast the screen seems to break up. Not graphical breakup like artifacts, etc., but objects seem to lag. It's hard to explain. Ex, I'm looking at a pole and then I quickly move the camera I see doubles of the pole before the image pops back when the camera stops moving. It seems to "shake" the objects are not solid when the camera moves. It's not ghosting as I have seen it before on LCD.
Is this a refresh rate issue? My computer LCD does not do this. I can move the camera as fast as I want and everything stays "solid" and doesn't break up. I have tried both 1080i and 720p and the effect is there. I notice this sometimes when I watch movies and the camera pans quickly, but I think that may be because it's shot at a slow 24fps.

what you are describing sounds like "frame tearing"
this can be a verticlar sinc issue - try turning that on in your video setting options if you have that amount of control in your xbox.
I am a PC gamer with a 7800GTX card, so it has lots of power. maybe the xbox is not as powerful as your PC video card - the fact that your LCD doesn't have this issue has nothing to do with the LCD itself, it is more to do with the video processor .
same with the plasma - it can only work with the info the xbox can send it - if the xbox is too slow to process all teh frames as you whip the camera, it may have tearing issues - and that is not the plasmas fault.
did that make any snce?

It's definetely not frame tearing or Vsync as I have a pretty high video card and know how those problems look. It's not the motion blur problem in the link, as this is not motion blur. The image seems to jump. Instead of having a smooth solid background when the camera moves the images in the background kind of jump in tiny increments. Jump = Judder? I've been reading through some threads and could this be what people discribe as "judder"?

Would this game happen to be Perfect Dark Zero?

I have the same exact model as you and don't notice any lag at all. Does it happen on all the games you have?

no it's not PDZ. (not specificaly) I know PDZ has built in motion blur in the game when you turn real qucik the screen blurs. It happens with all games. Take any game with a camera you can control and look at the background objects when you move the camera. The objects kind of stutter in the background. They don't remain solid. BTW, doing this you may also see the green trail effect on plasma, so if you don't see green trails then you might not want to do this, because once you do you will always see them. My CRT RPTV also had this problem, and it's not just xbox. It happens all all sources it's just much more noticable on video games with camera controll.

Too bad the 60U doesn't have a VGA input--apparently connecting the Xbox in this way opens up the "PC" resolutions like 1024x768, which might null out the TV's internal scaler. Does the TV report 1024x768 in the EDID over HDMI? Then again, there's the pixel shape problem...can you specify the aspect ratio in the Xbox setup somewhere?

I think I know what the problem is. I think the frame rate in these games is to low. Most FPS xbox360 games run at around 40 frames and this creates a kind of judder when the camera is moved quickly. My PC runs most current FPS games at around 60-70 frames and the judder effect is very minimal. Thanks for your help guys. I'm gonna try and find a game that I know runs at around 60fps on my xbox360 and see if that helps. Overall the Panny is amazing.

But why doesn't your LCD exhibit the same problem? Anyway, I hope you have found a satisfactory solution. At least there's a place where you can share your experience with others in your community: http://gear.ign.com/articles/713/713106p1.html.

I don't think I was clear. I never hooked up my xbox360 to my PC monitor. I was comparing it to the FPS games that I play on my pc like Half Life 2. My PC is pretty good and I was getting frame rates of over 60. While most of the xbox360 games I'm playing right now like Battlefield 2 and GRAW run closer to 30.

Ah, I see. I'm not an Xbox fan, but that low of a frame rate is a bit surprising considering all of the dedicated hardware--and/or your PC experience is a testimony to the incredible power of the modern GPU...
I have this problem as well, but it is with NBA 2k6 which runs at 60fps

I know what you mean with the "trailing image" thing, I recently got a new 37" LCD flat panel and when I play NCAA Football 07 on my PS2 on it I notice that, when players run or move during the plays they seem to leave trails of thwem themselves, not super long or bad, but noticeable, liek a ghost is folling them super close. I don't notice anything like that when I play my XBox 360 games though, so I am guessing it's just an issue with the particular game and its video settings (480, 720, 1080 etc) not an issue with the TV itself. It could be wrong though.
My friend was over playing and he never noticed anything, I am going to call customer support monday and see what they have to say.
Its also making my eyes really hurt, maybe I will get used to it after a while.

Do you notice this on OTA or component input? I saw it on my 50PX60U. It used to be "macroblocking noise" (pixelation around moving objects). After firmware upgrade I got really fuzzy picture like a poor LCD.
I believe it's Panasonic as I don't have this problem with my Dell plasma. It must be the image processor.

The only image artifact I have on PC games sync'd to 60 Hz is the green trail, on my 50" Industrial unit. My bet for the cause of this is on the "Motion Pattern Noise Reduction" feature in these sets. Can you turn it off? If you read the brochure for the industrial units there's a very brief explanation of what it does. Seems like it could cause the effect you are describing. Brochure (http://catalog2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ModelDetail?storeId=11201&catalogId=13051&itemId=98056&catGroupId=14624&surfModel=TH-50PH9UK&displayTab=R)
I'm thinking that I don't see it because it might not be active on the VGA input...

I have a LG 42" model RU-42PX10 and I have a big problem when I play my xbox 360. When I try and play it seems like it is lagging, this is with any game. Its hard to explain...a example is when I try and play Halo 2. When I try and move it lags or judders, its almost like its retarted. This is really frustrating and I was wondering if there is any way I can fix this? I dont understand why this would happen? I'm to the point that I just want to throw the damn thing out the window. But before I do that I just wanted to know if anyone could help me out??? PLEASE
Is 3:2 pulldown enabled stud_41? If so, try turning it off.
Ok I have a Panny 4260U as well and while I have not connected and Xbox to this tv, I have noticed what I think is the same thing that Conan48 has noticed.
For me this seems to occur on the local PBS HD station here. When I am watching that channel, I have noticed that whenever there is a close up of a person's face and they are talking, and moving their head, I see patches of their skin, like their forehead or cheeks sort of stay in the spot they were for a brief second or 1/2 second and then that patch will move to where the rest of the face is going. Not sure how to better explain that.
I thought it may be the SA8300HD DVR I was watching the channel through, but I switched to antenna one time and watched the PBS station with the OTA HD feed, and I noticed this same motion "artifact" or trail, or smudging, not sure what to call it, but it did seem to be a bit less of an effect than through the DVR.
I did try turning the Video NR on and then off to see if this helped (it was OFF before I tried this test). It seemed that when the Video NR is on the effect is MUCH less pronounced, but still there, and when I turn it back off, it is back to being VERY noticeable.
Anyone else have any further info on this?

Just a thought...Halo 2 is backwards compatible with the 360. Halo 2 was originally designed for the first Xbox and not the 360. In order to play original Xbox games on a 360 the emulators (patches) need to be downloaded onto the 360 HDD. Because your playing Halo 2 on a Xbox 360 this might be leading to your juddering movements and have nothing to do with the TV.
