View Full Version : Advice on DVD player for Samsung HLS line-up

I'm really torn on trying to make a decision here, so I'm going to ramble a bit in hopes someone will jump in with a suggestion that will help me buy a new dvd player already!

My choices are:
Oppo 970
Oppo 971
Samsung 960

So, from what I've read macroblocking is a issue when using Faroudja based players with DLP, so should I go with the 970 and avoid the issue all together?

BUT the 960 outputs in 1080p and may do a better job than my DLP, so in that case I will have to adjust the macro issues out as best I can?

BUT I've also owned a 971 and really liked the player and know first hand it is a great unit, but with my Faroudja based DLP am I asking for trouble?

The kicker is, I'm watching dvds now via a Denon 1600 that also has the Faroudja chip in it and have not seen a single macroblocking issue yet. Is this because my connection with this unit is component? Or maybe because it does not upscale?

TIA for any help guys, I've covered both the 970 dump and 960 thread and I still can't make up my mind. I think I'm thinking to much about it! Oh, and any HLS owners please chime in on what player you are using!

MB does occur with certain displays, but it has nothing to do with a Faroudja chip being in the DLP (I have a Denon player and a Samsung HLN DLP, both with Faroudja, and have never seen any MB). There have been reports of MB with the Samsung HLR DLPs, but I have not seen anybody complaining of it with the HLS models.

Hm, well I have seen some postings on this board from HLS owners and at least the 960 complaining of severe MB.

Any HLS owners wish to chime in?

I haven't seen those posts myself. If that's the case, then you must avoid the Faroudja players, including the Oppo 971, the Pannys, and the Sammy 960. I'd recommend the Oppo 970 or a Sony or a different Samsung (the lower priced Sammys use a Zoran chip instead).
