I bought one of these units a couple months ago open box from best buy for a home gym. I just now got to set it up since the gym took longer to finish than expected. When I bought it, it had no manual, which is easy enough to find on the web. The remote they gave me is the ct-847, which does not match the picture of the remote in the manual. It controls some functions like power/volume/mute/input/etc.
My main problem is that "menu" does not work, so I can't go into set up mode. I need to change the setting from CABLE to TV(antenna). (I'm actually using a TV2 set up from a dish receiver, which needs antenna not cable.)
It is supposed to go through a setup at start time, but it does not. And I have tried programming my Dish and Harmony remotes to match the TV, but in both cases, while most functions work, "menu" does not.
Any ideas how to do one of the following:
1. force the startup script to come on? I've tried removing power to the unit a few times, but no luck.
2. get into setup without a remote. there are no buttons on the tv that allow this from what i can see.
3. get one of my remotes to work properly! anyone have the remote codes? i can have logictech/harmony manuall code them for me if necessary.
4. any other ideas?
Thanks,
Sean

Try leaving it unplugged for a couple hours, or better yet, overnight. This should bring up the first time setup menu.
I'm assuming there is no "menu" button on the front of the set? I would think one of your universal remote codes would work.
Do the universal remotes also work for power/volume/mute but not for "menu"? If that is the case, it sounds like you have a defective unit. EDIT: I just re-read your post and this IS the case. I would be getting worried about now that I had a defective unit.
If the unit is defective, I would hope BB would at LEAST let you exchange it for another open box unit. Is their return/exchange period 30 days or 90? Check your receipt.
If the unit works OK but just has the wrong remote, it should be pretty easy to explain to them you got the wrong remote, and get the correct one. Since you got a manual, at least you know what it is supposed to look like.
Good luck!

Typical Orion quality as always.

Stop Walter!
On the front of the set, I think if you hold both the channel up and down buttons in simultaneously for a couple of seconds, it will bring up the menu. Or it might be the volume up and down buttons.
I remember reading that this works with Orion sets.

I tried the volume up/down and channel up/down trick -- no luck.
This set has sat in the basement for a couple months waiting to be plugged in, so I don't think leaving it unplugged any longer will help. :-( I did try for 15 minutes or so, but no dice.
I can't believe there is no menu on the front. I guess I didn't look that closely in the store, as I just assumed there was one. Never thought that I wouldn't be able to get at least some remote to pull up the setup stuff. :-/
I've got an email into customer support and will try giving them a call tomorrow.

If it is the remote, Best Buy can order you the EXACT remote the tv is supposed to have.
I have run into this issue with a few Toshiba sets.......I had in my hand two Toshiba remotes, one universal (CT-877) the other which I am not sure of the model looked very similar but the menu button was in a different place. One remote did everything but go to the menu like you describe.....the other was able to access the menu just fine.
Like I said, just go back to the store and ask them to order you the OEM remote, they can very easily and it will get shipped in a few days.

As an update....
I called Toshiba, and they said there is no way to get to the menu without the remote. They did give the model number of the remote and gave me the name and number of a place to order it.
I called BestBuy, and even though I am 60 days past the return deadline of 30 days (it took a lot longer to finish this part of the basement than expected!), they are going to credit my CC $20 and had me order the replacement remote from their parts distributer, which ended up costing $20.03. I thought that was pretty decent of them, assuming the credit shows up. :-)
I really hope this fixes it! Toshiba said the set up script only comes on the 1st time the TV is powered on, and this was an open box, so I guess I'll never see it. I bet there is a lithium ion battery inside or something that keeps that state, so if you remove that, it probably would return it to its default state, but I don't want to go down that road. Let's hope the remote gets me into the setup menu!.
Thanks for all the response,
Sean
