Over the course of the last few weeks I've all of a sudden started to notice on my Sony an odd faint ghosted bar that moves left to right very fast. I can only describe it like a screen wipe. It's only noticable in pitch black areas (dark scenes) and is only showing up with my Xbox360 and Toshiba HD XA1. It doesn't show up on broadcast HD though.

I've worked with Ground Loops running vertically but I've never seen a horizontal problem like this before.

Any help wouuld be great.

Is it a faint pinkish vertical bar about 2-3 inches wide that sweeps across the screen about once every second or so?

Which 34" XBR do you have?

Thankfully it's not colored. It's pretty much a lighter/brighter shade of black (kinda like a pluge bar) and sweeps across the screen every second consistently. The model I have is the KV34XBR910.

How does your Toshiba look on your XBR? Pretty happy with my Oppo and have
heard from many that little improvement is noted on the smaller sets. Just wondering if there is a big difference from upconverted material.

The Toshiba looks brillant on my display. It's very difficult to going back and look at DVD after watching HD DVD on the set. I've begun to replace my DVD catalog titles with HD versions over the last month or so.

As far as the upconversion goes, I still prefer my Sony DVPS9000ES reference DVD player that outputs strickly 480p over what the Toshiba does with standard DVD's.

I'll point you to this thread: Vertical Bar on Sonys when Viewing 1080i (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?threadid=190083&highlight=vertical+bar)

Its a long thread but the short of it is this. 1080i input material can very often create the scrolling vertical bar problem you are having. It cannot be "fixed", but only "mitigated". The mitigation involves a number of service menu changes which are documented in a Sony service bulletin deeply embedded in the above thread.

A quick check to determine if the above condition is your problem can be made on your set by setting the service menu item HDPT from 1 to 0. This allows 1080i material to bypass the MID circuitry which is the source of the scrolling bar. The other option would be to try 720p as an input from your Xbox360 and/or Toshiba HD XA1. If a 720p does not result in the scrolling bar then that is positive evidence that your problem is the above threaded condition.

My 34HS510, which is the same vintage as your XBR910, had this problem and it was mitigated with service menu changes. I now only see the scrolling vertical bar when viewing 1080i material in twinview.

The older models XBR800 and prior usually required hardware changes as well as service menu changes.

Thanks. I made the adjustment this afternoon and it seemed to fix the problem. I'm going to keep my eye out for it over the next few days, but so far I don't see it anymore displaying 1080i.
