Hello everyone,
I don't see any "type vs type" specific pieces on the forum... so I'm putting it here. I'm sorry if I screwed up :(.
I am looking to get a 50 inch HDTV as I'll be sitting about 10 feet away from the new set. Anyways, I had my mind set on the Panasonic 50 inch (TH-50PX60U).
The three sets I'm looking at are:
Panasonic TH-50PX60U
Samsung HL-R5078W
Sony SXRD 50 inch (2006 model... definitely waiting for it to come out and see, but it's an option)
So the real situation is that it'll mainly be used for games from the 360 and the PS3. So I know the 360's *minimum* native output is 720p while some games have native 1080i output. As far as the PS3 goes, I know blu ray movies will output 1080p while the games will most likely be 720p/1080i and the rare occurance of a 1080p game.
The way I see it for my circumstance is...
Panasonic
Will support most of my games' native resolution at 720p. However, there's the probability of burn in considering I am playing games. It has gotten EXCELLENT reviews that make me want to buy it. However, it obviously can't display 1080p which comes with the PS3 (maybe solely for movies...).
Samsung
It's a DLP and I got 1080p but no true 1080p input. I have to replace the bulb... I suppose my native 720p games won't look as good on this set as opposed to the panasonic. However, it'll display the 1080i better as well as the blu ray movies. No risk of burn in, but there's that annoying rainbow effect that some people see and others don't (great, more confusing).
Sony
Assuming the new models get rid of the "green blob" I keep hearing about, the tv sounds great. It won't have the rainbow effect but i'll still have to replace bulbs. My resolution theory holds as well. I don't know how 720p games upconverted to 1080p on a 1080p tv will look. But most certainly my true 1080p content will look amazing.
So with knowing that I'll primarily use it for gaming, I have the following questions:
1. If I got the sony (which apparently takes in *true* 1080p), then will my games natively programmed at 720p (upconverted to 1080i/p) look fuzzy at all?
2. I hate to beat this topic to death... but as far as burn in goes. I play rpgs mainly which have lots and lots of menus. So you walk around, get into battle, have the menus... repeat over and over. So knowing this, getting the panasonic plasma would be okay or not? Are there any estimates (in terms of numbers) of what needs to happen to achieve burn in?
3. In the end, what would you do given the circumstance? I hate having to choose between the 720p and 1080p knowing the 1080p will force me to replace bulbs while the 720p will force me to try and avoid static images which is common in what I'll primarily be using it for.
Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!
