With the massive success of OLED since 1999, LG.Philips and Samsung are planning to release OLED TV this fall. Yes, OLED is going to be released this year. I hope that everything will goes according to plan and I'm for one who can’t wait to see this in action.

We said a little while ago that there would be OLED monitors in October this year. This was before that Sony and Samsung told us that they wouldn't be able to release products at this date. They are now even unable to give us a release date for this technology. Besides technical complications, this could also be explained by a change of strategy. The professional magazine Display Monitor reports in the last edition that Samsung and LG-Philips would be starting OLED panels mass production from September (October for Samsung) exclusively reserved for TVs.

LG Electronics currently operates two PM-OLED production lines in Gumi, South Korea, with a combined annual production capacity of 2 to 3 million PM-OLED display units for use in mobile phones. Since 1999, the company has invested a total of Won 200 billion (about $208 million) in its OLED business, according to LG.

If the deal goes through, LG.Philips is expected to begin mass production of AM-OLED during the fourth quarter of this year.

LG.Philips LCD is currently developing AM-OLED products. Earlier this year, it also signed an agreement with Eastman Kodak Co. to jointly evaluate and develop active-matrix OLED technology.

Samsung SDI and LG.Philips LCD will start mass producing the next-generation AM OLED TV screens this fall, as profits plummet in traditional LCD and PDP screen businesses.

On that note - these sets are supposed to be of the small size variety (15" - 25"). Don't get your shorts all knotted up waiting for any big ones.

I used to work for the company that invented OLED. Be advised, there still are tech issues that were once thought to have to be resolved but need revisiting (blue life). I say take a number and wait in line with the SED folks.

- Is there issues with R, G, or B color (peak wavelength) variation due to changing currents?

- Is there also variation in brightness vs. currents, even within identical LEDs?
