I am interested in purchasing a Pioneer 5070 however at my local store, they only have a 5060 on display. I know that it's discontinued however according to them, they won't be getting the 5070s for awhile. What are the advantages for the 5070 over last year's model? I was very impressed by the 5060 on display especially after I changed the setting from Dynamic to Standard. Please let me know what you think...also, any input from a current owner would be appreciated :D

IMHO they are both very nice displays. Just a couple of months ago the 5060 was considered by many to be one of the best 50" plasmas available. I think it really comes to down to a few points:

1) How do you feel about the Media Receiver? Some folks feel strongly one way or the other. Personally, it's not that big a deal to me, but you may feel differently.
2) Side vs bottom speakers - some folks have preferences or location constraints that make the switch from side speakers to bottom speakers a big deal. I have a 5.1 audio system, so I wouldn't be using the speakers in any case.
3) 1080p24 input - the 5070 has it, the 5060 doesn't. Doesn't matter to me, but again, a big deal to some folks.
4) Price - the 5070 MSRP is *considerably* lower than the 5060. I wouldn't pay over the 5070 MSRP for the 5060, and I would prefer even lower.
5) Finally PQ. As good as the 5060 is, IMHO the 5070 is a bit better. The difference is not huge, but I see it. To me, the 5070 seems a bit smoother - not soft, the sharpness is there, but it just seems a bit more pleasing than the 5060, and they delivered the improvement without losing the color pop that so many like in the 5060.

The 5060 is very, very nice - I would be very happy with a 5060. I do happen to think the 5070 PQ is bit better, and the fact that the price of the 5070 is lower makes it a no-brainer for me unless they are really blowing out the 5060.

Just my 0.5 cent...

I agree do not pay over the price of the 5070. I would recommend the 5070, because the media box seems a little strange to me.
They are both awesome sets.

I have a 5060 and like the media box; I would prefer it had more useable inputs, though (I don't know if the 5070 is the same, but with the 5060 if you set inputs 1 and 3 as HDMI it disables them for component, and the only other component input is on the front of the box; also the VGA connector is on the front). I also prefer side speakers, but currently I'm not using mine (they aren't mounted).

I'm surprised there hasn't been more controversy over Pio switching to NEC based glass, which I assum they did since the resolution of 5070 is now standard NEC 1365 x 768 vs. the 5060 1280 x 768 (and the 43" model is gone, replaced by 42"). I haven't seen many comparisons of PQ between the two, most commenting that they look similar (althogh NEC has always had it's share of PQ fans in any case, and I'm guessing the electronics are still Pio).

The 5070 includes these features:

"Ability to Accept a 1080p/24Hz Signal" &

"Dual NTSC and ATSC Tuners with CableCard Interface"

does the 5060?

I prefer the detachable speakers as well.

They both have detachable speakers.

The 5060 does not have 1080p24 input.

The 5060 has "Dual NTSC/Single ATSC/Digital Cable Ready (DCR) with CableCARD™ slot."

5070 uses new glass from the NEC factory, as well as has a new processor/etc from what I understand, (search the forums for Pioneer Trainer...he works at pioneer and has addressed this question in his thread). The 7th generation pio's have some really sweet looking pictures, I would definately try to find one in store to view before taking a 5060 plunge.

When my wife and I discovered that the 5060 was being discontinued, we actually purchased the 5060 a few months earlier than needed. We were renovating the master bedroom (new paint, curtains, wallpaper) and we are just finishing that project now.

I built a full scale foam core model of the 5060 to help determine best location for the plasma TV. We decided to mount the TV above the door and window on the wall opposite from the bed. I purchased a Sanus wall mount and tested the TV position with the TV model and mount before finishing the wall and curtain work.

With the panel mounted above the door and windows, it is an advantage to have the media receiver with all the connections at the media receiver rather than requiring all connections at the panel itself. I just have to install the 2 cables from the media receiver to the panel and then all current and future connections for the TV are made at the media receiver located in the AV rack. We also chose the 5060 over the 5070 because we do not have the vertical space for speakers below the panel -- in other words, the side speakers work much better for us.

Congrats on the purchase. Interesting you found both of them at the same price. That could lead me to 5070 as well. Where did you purchase (if that is ok to ask on here?)

This may be posted elsewhere, but can someone confirm on the 5070 if you can have 2 HDMI devices active at the same time as 2 component inputs? On the 5060 you can't (except for the component input on the front of the media box). That's one of the few things I dislike about my 5060 (that and it's not a 60" ).
