I was at a store yesterday looking at the Mitsubishi 52" with 1080p DLP model no #WD-52631 and then I saw also how great the picture also was on a 50" Phillips Plasma model no #50PF7220A/37. I can't decide which one to get. Anybody have a thoughts on these models ?
Thanks for our help.
Don't get either. They're both junk sets. Shame on you for even looking at them.
When you come to your senses, get a Pioneer 6070HD instead.

This qualifies as a very unhelpful response, if not rude. The OP is looking at two sets in the 50" size range. Recommending a set which hasn't even shipped yet and is likely far more expensive than what ryane75 is looking for is not helpful.
Back to the original question: This is the flat panel forum, so most here will recommend the plasma. The Panasonics and Pioneer plasmas are more highly regarded here than the Philips and LG sets, although the latest Samsungs are improved over last year. You should take a look at the the Panasonic TH-50PX60U which is in the same price range as the 50" Philips. They both have 2 HDMI and 2 component inputs, so they are the same in that regard. I see the Philips has USB and Ethernet ports if those features are of interest to you. But the Panasonic will provide a better picture quality with better black levels (just get it out of the vivid mode the Pannys are usually set to in the stores). LOTS of postings and threads here on the Panasonic plasmas to read.

I believe you need to take your time. Don't be in a hurry and this forum is a good start. You can see the opinions are strong here and mine are too so try to read between the lines from all of us opinionated geeks.
If you have to buy a plasma theres only one manufactuer to consider. Pioneer! Thats it. But I'd look at other technologies first.
RPTV (Lcos, DLP) is a good choice and the new Sony SXRD's are good place too look. The only problem with these are the bulb issues. If you decide on one of these make sure you buy from a local retailer and get an extended warranty that cover at least two bulbs a year replacement for each year of the warranty.
My favorite are flat panel LCD and with the latest improvements and larger sizes will be the future of TV's. Cost a little more but they will soon be competitive with same size tv's of other technologies. Look at some 42" and 45" and 46" sizes. Sharp, Sony and Samsung's are worth a look.
Good luck and above all take your time its not a race.

Nice post...I have been a long time SXRD fan, and didnt open my blinders to any other tv types...but this past weekend, I realized that for me personally I am indeed balancing PQ with TV look/design...therefore I am newly looking into the FP world (LCD/Plasmas)...I would love to hear more as to why FP LCD's are your favorite...
Thanks!

Process of elimination. I tried everything else. Path of least resistance and flat panel worked best for me.
Look at some of the pros and cons of each technologies.
Flat panel LCD preform in all lighting enviroments. The improvements in LCD like better shadow detail are improving every generation, and in all areas other areas. Lag and response times are way overblown issue.
Plasma have big problems with glare and reflections. CRT likeness is why its popular but have contrast issues.
RPTV's have viewing angle problems. Just the other day I was looking at an sxrd and noticed that its best to view it straight on. You can't hang it on the wall. Prices vs size is a great advantage for now.
Also it seems to me that all TV's will hang on the wall someday because of space restrictions and its a cleaner look. And when flat panel LCD's become price competitive with improvements they will dominate IMO.

My new Philips 50pf9631d plasma set was delivered and set up by Circuit City on 7/15, and I also have my new HD service from DISH network installed. This is my first HDTV and I am tremendously impressed with the whole set up. The HD broadcasts are mesmerizing, and the SD broadcasts are much better than I had been led to expect. I have found no flaws whatsoever, in either the Philips set or the DISH VP622 DVR set top box. I did have them use an HDMI cable for the STB to HDTV connection. I had thought that 50 inches might be too big for my living room, but it looks and feels just right. I also like the Ambilight feature, along with the wide black frame around the picture. The user's manual is very informative. I am using just the sound from the set proper, and it sounds very good to me; I don't feel I will need a surround setup with this set. I have no hint of image retention to this point, but am aware of the potential, so am managing it accordingly. :) :) :)
