I saw on the Replaytv.us website that he has some remote controls that were "upgraded" to seperately control multiple replay tv units. Supposedly, the single remote uses different controller codes that allows each RTV to determine if it is the one being controlled.
Is this for real?
I thought all RTV units used the same controller codes and thus, ANY RTV remote control from a related series is able to control it.
Are we able to select a controller code so that a remote control can "choose" which RTV it wants to control??

Yes, it certainly is. You can set each ReplayTV to a different unit code by entering 243-zones at the setup menu. Then you have to program your remote to use the same unit code. That is the tricky part. You can only do it with JP1-capable remotes or other advanced remotes such as a Pronto or Harmony. The OEM ReplayTV remotes are JP1-capable, and can be programmed to do this as long as you buy a JP1 cable and invest the time needed to learn how to use JP1-related software.

Any remote that can use RC6a codes (admittedly, this generally means higher-end remotes like Prontos and Harmonys [Harmonies?], as j.m. said) can control multiple ReplayTVs. All of the necessary RC6a codes can be found here: http://www.craigcolvin.com/pronto/ReplayCodes.html
If you have a remote that can accept Pronto codes, you can generate the Pronto hex codes using ProntoEdit, extract them using CCF Dumper from the CCF Tools suite, and then import them into your remote's programming application. ProntoEdit (http://www.remotecentral.com/cgi-bin/files/rcfiles.cgi?area=pronto&db=other&br=programs&dv=philipsprontoseries&md=philipsprontoeditv405&kw=&st=&ar=&dt=&so=&pg=1&file=software/ProntoEdit4.zip) and CCF Tools (http://www.remotecentral.com/cgi-bin/files/rcfiles.cgi?area=pronto&db=other&br=utilities&dv=ccfprograms&md=ccftools&kw=&st=&ar=&dt=&so=&pg=1&file=utilities/CCFTools.zip) can be found at Remote Central (http://www.remotecentral.com/).
You can easily program the replay remote to control multiple replays, sat. boxen, hdtv tuners, etc. see this post for how to program it for multiple replays:

DANG IT. I apologize.
I forgot to mention that I am using 45xx replay units.
Thank you for replaying to my post anyway. Guess it shows how bright the people are on this forum, I have no idea what the above posts were talking about. I also found that my 243-zones does not bring up a "code changer" option for my 45xx version.
I was kind of hoping that it would be a matter of some simple multiple-key-sequencing option to change a coding of the remote .... or something like that.
Well, I think I will stick with the simple version. Leave one unit off while the other is on. That way only one will pay attention to the remote.
THe website I mentioned above did not even mention which replay unit versions his modified remotes would work on. I will make the assumption based on your posts that only the 5xxx and up series have the option to change the remote coding. Correct?
Thanks all.

Did you do 243-RZ from the Setup menu? This is crucial. Remote codes cannot be changed from the "normal" 243-RZ menu, but only the one accessed from the Setup menu. According to the craigcolvin.com link I posted above, this trick works for all ReplayTVs running RTV software version 3 or later--including not only 4xxx and 5xxx boxes, but also 2xxx and 3xxx boxes.

AAAHHHHHH
OK.
I have never done that before, let alone heard of it.
I will check that out when I get home.
Thanks for the clarification.

It's (sort of) possible to train 2xxx/3xxx units to use new codes, but in practice not functional, because every time they reboot (without your knowlege) they grab each others codes.
For 4.x and above it's "243-RZ from the Setup menu" and it works.

It's been a while since I gave my showstopper away, but I though it was power outages that caused it to forget the learned codes -- not reboots.

It wasn't so much the inconvience of *forgetting* as much as it was the (re)learning of the same code (by multiple units) when next I used the remote.
