Hi. I need an LCD TV that can function as a computer monitor at a distance of 7 feet. What screen size and resolution would you recommend? I'm not a videophile and I'm not going to use it for gaming. I'm basically going to use it for web browsing and watching TV.

I'm new to this and there are so many posts on this forum I didn't know where to start. If someone could get me started on my search and/or recommend some inexpensive brands that would be appreciated. Also what kind of connectors should I be looking for to connect my PC to the TV? My desktop video card has DVI and my laptop has a VGA output.

I'm running 600x800 on 19" from 4'. Chars are to small for me to run a higher resolution. You can use ratios to consider alternatives. For example, for me to do 1920x1080, I will need a screen that is 1080/600 larger than 19". To just move the monitor from 4' to 7', I will need a monitor that is 7/4 times bigger than 19". I want to run 1920x1080 at 6', so I will be getting a HDTV that is (1080/600)(6/4)(19)=51.3" (Note, vertical screen size should be used for the calculation to correct for aspect ratio.) So, I'll get a 52" 1080p LCD this fall.

That's why you hear others say, to full appreciate 1080, you need big and close. And, expect bad content (SD) to look terrible.

Typically, the problem is that as you increase the resolution, the text gets too small (especially for my tired old eyes). You can try to increase the font size, but that screws-up the formatting on some web sites & applications. I think it's something you may have to see for yourself to know whether it's acceptable.

Nice math.. but not too realistic in my opinion. Viewing a 19" LCD screen from 2 feet, then moving to 4 feet, wouldn't require a 38" screen. It's not a linear calculation.
