It appears there are only 2 DVD players from Oppo, and I need help on deciding on which one to get. They seem to be the best "bang for the buck" upconverting DVD players. I have seen the comparison (http://oppodigital.com/dv970hd/dv970hd_compare.html) of the 2 models on the Oppo website. How do most people feel about the differences in the 2 models? Which of the 2 upconverts better? Which player is easier to navigate?

Also, why would the more expensive one only include DVI instead of HDMI?

If it matters, I will be using the DVD player with a 50-56" (not sure yet) 1080p DLP HDTV (with HDMI inputs).

How does the upconverted picture of these Oppo players compare with that of the Toshiba HD-A1 (which is said to have miraculous upconverting capabilities)?

The 971H has the better scaler/deinterlacer than the 970HD. I assume that the limited implementation of the better video chip in the 971H has something to do with the DVI (video-only) digital out instead of the HDMI (video/audio) digital out. Note that the video would be the same over HDMI and DVI if 971H used both.

I recommend you read
http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/cgi-bin/shootout.cgi?function=search&articles=all

The 971H has the highest-rated scaler/deinterlacer in its price range. I don't think you'd get better quality than that for DVDs at this price point, even out of the HD-A1 (where you're paying for the advance in technology first).

I own the OPPO OPDV971H.

I would say the HD-A1 is better than the Oppo.

However, my HD-A1 had problems playing burned DVDs (SL or DL) until I upgraded to 2.0.

For the money, I would say get the HD-A1 and enjoy HD movies as well as nice upconverts.

You can get the HD-A1 for $400 shipped now.

I love my OPPO OPDV971H. It is really good player. Their Customer Service is Best. I had my unit for a while and had little problem with Remote Control. It stopped responding to keys from remote control. They replaced my unit. "Hats Off" to OPPO People.

Still a suggestion for OPPO Group to have atleast some basic functional keys available on the unit itself so that if Remote doesnot work then you have your old ways to "Get your lazy Butt Off the Couch and make it to work" (LOL)

It is better for sure and worth the money.

Colors are more vibrant than the Oppo and shadow detail just looks better.

The image just "pops" at your more from the HD-A1.

I'd call Oppo. In fact, I did call Oppo before I made my decision. Their url is http://www.oppodigital.com. You can find their phone # easily. Best way to decide.

I don't think this poll will help anyone. Whether the 970 or 971 is better or more suitable for your needs depends entirely on the rest of your setup. Oppo has provided some basic parameters and the rest has been discussed in the respective threads on these players.

The 971 is better for me because I don't have an external scaler nor a top notch internal one in my monitor. Also, my monitor is over 50 inches and I require the capability of 2:2 cadence on PAL format discs.

If you don't understand these statements, then you're not ready to purchase. Your situation and equipment may be entirely different than mine, and if you don't know how or why, you won't make the correct decision.

What's with your abrupt obtrusiveness?

Yes: the 970hd on the 885 (european version of the 880). It is supported by the harmony database, but some keys are missing. I have made the 885 learn a few from the original remote. Hopefully the harmony database will eventually support all keys.
